A subcommittee formed by the Machine Tool Safety Standards Committee (Bll) of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) adopted the acronym TR3 to designate its work. TR stands for technical report. The Committee, B11.TR3, has issued a document titled Risk assessment and reduction —A guideline to estimate, evaluate and reduce risks associated with machine tools. The Secretariat for this work is The Association for Manufacturing Technology. TR3 became a registered document at ANSI in November 2000. [Pg.291]

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to facilitate a kaizen blitz (rapid continuous improvement) event as an AME (Association for Manufacturing Excellence) volunteer. Team-based kaizen events are the perfect training method to help leaders understand lean leadership. This event was not at the manufacturing plant in which I worked, but in one that had volunteered to host this three-day kaizen event. It was one of my first experiences at facilitation of a kaizen blitz and having that responsibility in someone else s plant really accelerated my learning curve. [Pg.16]

Other safety professionals have recognized that literature on lean may not include the outcome of accidents as waste to be eliminated. Also, they have encountered situations where safety concepts and lean applications were in conflict, with the results being far from satisfactory. In that respect consider the comments made in a publication by the Association for Manufacturing Technology (AMT) of ANSI B11.TR7 in 2007. Its title is ANSI Technical Report for Machines—Design for Safety and Lean Manufacturing. [Pg.477]

Who are the usual attendees sent to workshops and conferences My observation is that they are managers and professional staff. Each year I attend the largest Lean conference in the world. The Association for Manufacturing Excellence sponsors it and each year approximately 2,000 people are in attendance. The associates who work with their hands to make the products in the companies represented at this conference are a small fraction of the total attendance number. Why is it that companies who are on the Lean journey, and understand that they have to engage their employees to realize Lean success, do not send the people who work with their hands to these events If you want everyone to think like the managers of the business, then I believe you need to expose everyone, or at least some of them, to the same experiences as the managers. This simple act can accelerate the Lean journey for any business. At this site, I had the opportunity to interact with and influence... [Pg.123]
