Much of the discussion at the ANS-NCG meetings was concerned with the appropriate professional society affiliation for the group s activities. Program developers tended to lean toward the ACM however, they realized that the majority of the program users were active ANS members. A letter was sent to the editor of the Communications of the Association for Computing Machinery recommending that computer manufacturers be influenced to (1) implement the standard FORTRAN, and (2) where deviations from the standard exist, flag non-standard statements which are accepted, as well as standard statements which have been implemented in their compiler in a non standard fashion, and describe these variations in their compiler documentation (I5I).
