Assessment of student learning

An objective of this chapter, and indeed of much of this book, is to illustrate the importance of linking instructional practice and assessment to a theoretical approach. Schema theory provides a new conceptual foundation for the organization of instruction and the subsequent assessment of students learning from it. In this chapter, I discuss some of the theoretical and practical issues involved in using schema-based instruction. In Chapter 5, I describe a functioning instructional system that is schema driven.

In the section Teaching Chemical Tests, on pgs. 9 to 14, you will find a detailed discussion about the assessment of students learning. The specific goals and related assessments for this unit are summarized in Figure T-l on pg. 10. Please keep in mind that some third-graders may not completely understand every concept listed or master every skill. As you observe your class, look for the development of these ideas and skills in your students rather than their mastery.

Oral examinations take an active approach to assessment of student learning. They provide insight into how students understand and relate concepts. Furthermore, practicing engineers are faced daily with the realtime need to apply rational arguments based on fundamental concepts. By using oral exams, it is possible to assess a student s ability to construct sound conceptual arguments. 

Description Assessment of student learning is the measure of the extent to which each student achieves specified learning outcomes. Instructors usually conduct this assessment within their respective courses. Effective learning assessment uses a variety of methods matched appropriately to learning outcomes that address disciplinary knowledge, as well as personal and interpersonal skills, and product, process, and system building skills, as described in Standard 2. These methods may include written and oral tests, observations of student performance, rating scales, student reflections, journals, portfolios, and peer and self-assessment. 

An instructor can assign a reading and electronic quiz, and do little more. This practice alone may represent an improvement in safety instruction, requires virtually no additional work on the part of the instructor and no allocation of class/lab time, and provides some form of assessment of student learning. 

Results from the initial offering of the course will be presented from the perspective of assessment of student learning gains, student self-evaluation of course performance, student evaluation of course delivery, as well as instructor observations and student feedback.
