Recently, much attention has been devoted to prior learning assessment (PEA) as a method to award academic credit or advanced level placement for competencies acquired through previous work experience. As is discussed in more detail later in this article, PEA is a useful methodology for decreasing coursework and time requirements. However, it is not a simple process and requires considerable effort by both students and faculty.

The reader deserves to have a learned assessment of the subject matter covered in a given chapter. For example, is this field stale or new What is the prognosis for future developments in this area These are often perplexing questions, and the reader deserves an honest answer (the present author is tr5dng to give in this section).
