Interpersonal skills

Develop and enhance the self-awareness and interpersonal skills that will enable them to function better in the world of work. [Pg.23]

This chapter is the first chapter in this book and serves as an introduction The first section of this chapter starts with a discussion of what is a medicinal chemist In this chapter the reader will notice far more attention to the people aspect of the discipline of medicinal chemistry than will be found in later chapters. This is by design. When expert practitioners in the field discuss success in medicinal chemistry the focus is usually very much on the person rather than on the technology. We admire the persistent drug hunters. We remember the individuals who do not give up easily. We appreciate those individuals with the interpersonal skills that facilitate an effective therapeutic project team. We admire those medicinal chemists who think out of the box and come up with the insights that transform a program. In this introduction I have tried to give some credit to this people factor. [Pg.23]

The leader may become aware of confidential information while simultaneously facing outside demands for premature release of the team s findings. The selection process in your fire department is likely to include one or more oral interviews. There may be an individual interview with the chief or deputy chief, or there may be an oral board, in which you would meet with several people—or you may face both. Whether it is an individual interview or an oral board, the interviewers are interested in your interpersonal. skills— how well you communicate with them—as well as in your qualifications to be a firefighter. [Pg.32]

The oral board typically assesses such qualities as interpersonal skills, communication skills, judgment and decision-making abilities, respect for diversity, and adaptability. The board itself consists of two to five people, who may be firefighters or civilian personnel or interview specialists. There is usually some variety in the makeup of the board It usually consists of officers of various ranks and/or civilians from the personnel department or from the community. [Pg.33]

In addition to oral interviews, there is a new trend that is becoming more prevalent throughout the country the use of video-based tests for observing and assessing interpersonal skills and judgment under standardized testing conditions. These sessions may be used subsequent to the oral interview, or in lieu of it, depending on the department s individual require-... [Pg.348]

Boddy, D. and Buchanan, D. (1992). Take the Lead interpersonal Skills for Project Managers. Prentice Hall. [Pg.314]

Most books and courses on self-development are to do with personal skills (usually interpersonal skills) and coping skills (e.g. stress and time management), while self-management tends to be primarily about managing one s external behaviour without necessarily exploring its well-springs. [Pg.335]

Most of these issues can be addressed through interpersonal skills, which are not the subject of this chapter. However, the staling process of chemometric models can be addressed by performing three important tasks during the project (1) publicize the limitations of your models as soon as you are aware of them, (2) do the hard work early on (experimental designs for calibration, collection and analysis of many samples) in order to avoid embarrassments through model extrapolations, and (3) keep an eye on your methods as they are operating, and update/adjust them promptly. [Pg.324]

Applicants who are missing any of the key criteria for the job should be rejected. For instance, if the object is to recruit a person who can immediately supply a particular skill or experience, applicants who do not have these skills should be passed over, even if on other counts they look attractive. If there is time to train an individual for a particular job, or a person with management potential in the medium term is being sought, these other factors, such as interpersonal skills, will be more influential when selecting for the short list. [Pg.30]
