Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) meta-heuristics is one such technique that is based on the cooperative forging strategy of real ants [1],[2]. In this approach, several artificial ants perform a sequence of operations iteratively. Ants are guided by a greedy heuristic algorithm which is problem dependenf that aid their search for better solutions iteratively. Ants seek solutions using information gathered previously to... [Pg.115]

Solution construction In BAS, artificial ants construct solutions by tfaversing the mapping graph as shown in Fig.2 below. [Pg.120]

The ant algorithm reproduces this behaviour of ant colonies in the pheromone trail update procedure. The search for a solution is terminated, when the maximum number of iterations has been reached or the maximum computational time has been achieved. Then, the shortest trajectoiy is selected from all of the solutions found by the artificial ants. Afterwards, the best solution is presented in a graphical form and the new course of the own ship at every segment of the determined safe, optimal trajectory is displayed. If the algorithm has not found a solution, such information is displayed after the calculations are completed. The flowchart of the ant algorithm for safe ship trajectoiy planning is shown in Figure 1. [Pg.154]

The modification is the calculation of the own ship speed reduction manoeuvre, if after the maximum computational time the solution concerning the course alterations has not been found by the artificial ants. The speed is decreased by 25% and the procedure of checking, whether the new own ship trajectory with reduced speed does not collide with the trajectories of the target ships, is carried out. [Pg.155]

The use of an ant algorithm for collision avoidance at sea allows the determination of safe, optimal trajectory of a ship hy the use of a collective action of agents - artificial ants, which shows that the indirect mechanism of communication between agents hy modification of the environment, with the right balance between exploration and exploitation, is an effective method to solve the problem of global optimization. [Pg.160]
