Art textiles

Textile-based sensors have been integrated into mattresses, pyjamas/underwear, and caps/patches to monitor various parameters. This section gives an overview of the state-of-the-art textile-based sensor systems for sleep monitoring. 

Art textiles. Artists may produce prints as part of their art practice. Artists or print designers may also produce artworks, as commissioned by architects or interior designers, often configured as installations or displays. Many artists/designers working within this field supplement their practice with teaching and research within educational institutions.

Some historians have speculated that Perkin discovered his synthetic dye after spilling some of the solution on his worktable and sopping it up with a silk cloth. But an accident like that hardly seems necessary. Perkin and a young friend who was interested in art had already discovered one chemical with the properties of a dye. Moreover, the textile industry was the biggest employer of chemists, and the most scientifically advanced chemical industries involved dyes and cotton printing. 

Men have always used the natural materials around us to produce functional objects and works of art. Paintings and other objects that are part of our cultural heritage, including textiles, books, sculptures, archaeological objects, furniture and the organic residues found in association with them (e.g. cosmetics, medicines, perfumes, food), contain a wide variety of organic materials from natural to synthetic.

In any case the wastewater will finally be fed into rivers, lakes, or the sea thus some wastewater treatments have to be performed before the textile effluents are released either to the communal wastewater treatment plant (CWWT) or into the rivers, lakes, and so on. Normally physical and (bio-) chemical treatments (e.g., adjustment of pH, temperature, sedimentation, flocculation) are performed in the textile plant, while the following biological treatment (aerobic, anaerobic degradation) is performed either in the textile plant or in a CWWT. The site of the biological treatment is dependent on the location of the textile plant however, a biological treatment of textile effluents preceding release into surface water is state of the art. 

SEM is particularly useful when integrated with an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), thereby allowing the determination of elemental composition of the materials that are also being observed and micrographed. Elemental composition of fibers and deposits has been studied in textiles from Etowah (51). The elemental composition reflects their burial environment in association with copper as well as their constituent plant fibers. Rowe (52) applied this technique successfully to pigments used in rock art, and it has been used in the study of archaeological fibers (11, 53-55).
