The screw of Archimedes is as ancient, at least, as the age of that mathematician, who died more than 2,000 years ago. Diodorus Siculus speaks of it, l, i, p, 21, and l. v., p. 217, of Stevens edition of 1559, folio and Vitruvius, xii. The cutting of its spiral worm into sections for conveying flour or grain, seems to have been an invention of Mr, Evans, and to be a fair subject of a patent right. Archimedes screw. This type of plant was originally designed for the distillation of wine residues. A different system is provided by the chimie ne aroma process continuous distillation method. Once again, the plant material is delivered via a hopper to several interconnected tubes. These tubes are slightly inclined and connected to each other. The biomass is carried slowly through the tubes, by means of a worm screw, in a downward direction. Steam is injected at the end of the last tube and is directed upward in the opposite direction to that of the movement of the plant material. The essential oil-laden steam is de ected near the point of entrance of the biomass, into the condenser. The exhausted plant material is unloaded by another worm screw located near the point of the steam entrance to the system. [Pg.155]

Archimedes screw pump dispensing utilizes an Archimedes screw to push the adhesive or solder paste out of a nozzle (see Fig. 40.18.) The speed and duration of a turn, as well as the size of the opening, determine the quantity of adhesive or paste deposited on the site. As in the case of the time-pressure technique, different deposit quantities can be realized by multiple spindle (heads) or a computer program that alters the screw speed or turn duration to change the amount of material dispensed from the same orifice. All other considerations with respect to the roles of adhesive or solder paste viscosity and shelf-life also apply to this technique. [Pg.932]

The scroll is an Archimedes screw that moves slack wax from the outer ends of the filter to a center pipe. The slack wax falls down the pipe and may either proceed down a slide where it may be combined with slack wax from other filters into a slack wax drum or into a wax boot or vessel. This is a small drum dedicated to the filter. From the large wax drum or the wax boot the slack wax is pumped to either wax recovery, the second stage of dewaxing or deoiling depending on the plant configuration. [Pg.47]
