Section 2 combines the former separate section on Mathematics with the material involving General Information and Conversion Tables. The fundamental physical constants reflect values recommended in 1986. Physical and chemical symbols and definitions have undergone extensive revision and expansion. Presented in 14 categories, the entries follow recommendations published in 1988 by the lUPAC. The table of abbreviations and standard letter symbols provides, in a sense, an alphabetical index to the foregoing tables. The table of conversion factors has been modified in view of recent data and inclusion of SI units cross-entries for archaic or unusual entries have been curtailed. [Pg.1286]

One of these alternate models, postulated by Gunter Wachtershanser, involves an archaic version of the TCA cycle running in the reverse (reductive) direction. Reversal of the TCA cycle results in assimilation of CO9 and fixation of carbon as shown. For each turn of the reversed cycle, two carbons are fixed in the formation of isocitrate and two more are fixed in the reductive transformation of acetyl-CoA to oxaloacetate. Thus, for every succinate that enters the reversed cycle, two succinates are returned, making the cycle highly antocatalytic. Because TCA cycle intermediates are involved in many biosynthetic pathways (see Section 20.13), a reversed TCA cycle would be a bountiful and broad source of metabolic substrates. [Pg.664]

The Internet has become the best source for thermodynamic data. Run a search on something like chemical thermodynamic data on any serious search engine, and you will hnd multiple sources, most of which allow free downloads. The data in the standard handbooks, e.g. Perry s Handbook (see Suggestions for Further Reading section of Chapter 5), are still correct but rather capricious in scope and likely to be expressed in archaic units like those sprinkled here and there in this book. [Pg.255]

However, the question must always be asked as to whether these processes could have taken place on the primordial Earth in its archaic state. The answer requires considerable fundamental consideration. Strictly speaking, most of the experiments carried out on prebiotic chemistry cannot be carried out under prebiotic conditions , since we do not know exactly what these were. In spite of the large amount of work done, physical parameters such as temperature, composition and pressure of the primeval atmosphere, extent and results of asteroid impacts, the nature of the Earth s surface, the state of the primeval ocean etc. have not so far been established or even extrapolated. It is not even sure that this will be possible in the future. In spite of these difficulties, attempts are being made to define and study the synthetic possibilities, on the basis of the assumed scenario on the primeval Earth. Thus, for example, in the case of the SPREAD process, we can assume that the surface at which the reactions occur could not have been an SH-containing thiosepharose, but a mineral structure of similar activity which could have carried out the necessary functions just as well. The separation of the copy of the matrix could have been driven by a periodic temperature change (e.g., diurnal variation). For his models, H. Kuhn has assumed that similar periodic processes are the driving force for some prebiotic reactions (see Sect. 8.3). [Pg.161]

The RCC proceeds formally in exactly the opposite direction, from the C4 molecule to the C6 molecule via uptake of C02, but without the help of highly specialized enzymes. However, it is not a hypothetical archaic phenomenon, but has been observed in cells which exist today, for example in the photosynthetic bacterium Chlorobium thiosulfatophilum (Evans et al., 1966). [Pg.197]

How could such a complex information transfer system have evolved No witnesses from the archaic period, three to four billion years ago, have survived even the analysis of meteoritic rock does not help here. [Pg.216]

The early period of the Earth s history, around 3.8 1 billion years ago, is completely shrouded in darkness possible witnesses from this archaic period might help to cast some light. So we are looking for possible remains of the first primitive life forms on our planet—fossils, or to be exact, microfossils, which refers to the remains of living cells. What have survived are mainly only cell walls, which can be isolated from sedimentary rocks when the silicate-, sulphide- or carbonate-rich minerals are chemically dissolved away. The microfossils are found in the remaining carbon-containing residue, transparently thin platelets of which are prepared for microscopic studies. [Pg.257]

Archaic fossils can only be found in geological formations which have not suffered any dramatic changes or deformations since their formation. The area of Western Australia near Marble Bar and North Pole is part of the geological formation known as the Pilbara Shield (Buick et al 1995). The hot, desolate North Pole region is about 40 km from the small town of Marble Bar. The sediments containing the fossils are in a former volcanic lagoon, which was formed in a complicated process (Groves et al., 1981). This area of western Australia was explored and described in detail years ago because of the many ore deposits it contains. In Swaziland, in the... [Pg.259]

Hydrothiocyanic acid (also known by the archaic name rhodanic acid), HSCN, is a strong acid, so it is easy to prepare stable amine hydrothiocyanate salts such as that of piperidine, C5HnN (abbreviated as pip). In this reaction, the less volatile base, piperidine, replaces the volatile weak base, NH3. [Pg.700]
