Platelet Inhibition Ginger extract has been found to inhibit platelet aggregation induced by arachidonic acid, epinephrine, ADP, and collagen (Srivastava 1984). The extract s ability to inhibit cyclooxygenase activity and thromboxane levels correlated well with inhibition of platelet aggregation (Srivastava 1984 Mustafa et al. 1993). The type of preparation used also affects platelet inhibition, because roasted and charcoal of ginger were effective, while ether extracts of raw and dried ginger were not (Wu et al. 1993). 

In 1994, Wu et al. described the isolation and structural elucidation of clausenaquinone A (112) from the stem bark of C. excavata (107). This carbazole-1,4-quinone alkaloid exhibited potent inhibitory activity of rabbit platelet aggregation induced by arachidonic acid, as well as cytotoxicity in the HCT-8, RPMI-7951, and TE-671 tumor cells. The degree of inhibition is dependent on the type of inducer and on the structure of the flavonoid. At 30 pM, fisetin, kaempferol or quercetin inhibit the platelet aggregation induced by arachidonic acid, whereas morin and myricetin are effective only at concentrations greater than 150 pM... 

Morimitsu et al. (2000) have shown that after incubation with MS-ITC (5 or 10 min), the treated platelets were washed two times with phosphate-buffered saline, and MS-ITC potently inhibited platelet aggregation induced by thrombin. Then, MS-ITC could not show any effects on arachidonic acid cascade (phospholipase A prostaglandin synthase, and thromboxane synthase) in human platelets.

In guinea pig and rat plasma, French tarragon essential oil exhibited antiplatelet activity against ADP-, arachidonic acid-, and U46619-induced platelet aggregation. The essential oil also demonstrated an ability to destabilize clot retraction (Tognolini et al. 2006). 

The compound saikosaponin inhibited human platelet aggregation induced by ADP, with a potency of inhibition comparable to that of aspirin, and dose-dependently inhibited platelet thromboxane formation from exogenous and endogenous arachidonic acid. Effects were similar to that of epigallocatechin isolated from green tea (Chang and Hsu 1991). 

The compound crocetin demonstrated dose-dependent inhibition of platelet aggregation induced by ADP or collagen but not by arachidonic acid (Yang et al. 2008).

Inhibition of platelet aggregation induced by arachidonic acid, U46619, collagen, and ADP (with IC50 values of 51, 84, 191, and 640 pg/ml, respectively) was observed in guinea pig platelet-rich plasma treated with lavandin essential oil. Lavandin oil also destabilized clot retraction (IC50 of 149 pg/ml) induced by thrombin on rat platelet-rich plasma (Ballabeni et al. 2004).
