Aquaculture production market

Escolar and oilfish are of low commercial values because of their kerrior-rheic properties. They are considered as "not suitable for catering" or even banned from sale in various countries. However, they are commonly marketed as a result of their substantial by-catch with tuna and swordfish (Shadbolt et. ah, 2002 Tserpes et ah, 2006). According to the European Communities (Labelling of Fishery and Aquaculture Products) Regulations 2003 (S.I. No. 320 of 2003), L. flavobrunneum and R. pretiosus must be marketed as escolar and oilfish, respectively, and no other commercial names can be used alternatively. Yet, both species are usually mislabeled as sea bass, butterfish, rudderfish, white tuna, or codfish either... 

Various ELISA kits are commercially available for the detection of antibiotics in foods of animal origin. There at least four kits on the market for the detection of chloramphenicol (which is banned for use in food-producing species in the EU and many other countries) in tissue, honey, milk, and aquaculture products and five kits...

Marketing can be done by aquaculturists who operate their own processing faciUties. Most aquaculture operations depend on a regional processing plant to market the final product. In all cases aquaculturists should remember that their job is not complete until the product reaches the consumer in prime condition. 

However, the livestock feed market for astaxanthin, although presently small, will grow to a size comparable to the market for the synthetic compound, estimated at 185 million. The largest market for astaxanthin is aquaculture, which accounts for 24% of total global fisheries. Production is currently valued at 35 billion per annum and is expected to grow to 49 billion by 2010.

This holds true for not just the European markets, but also world-wide, with companies now expanding their acidifier related businesses to Asia and America. The use of acidifiers, especially in pig production, has become a global opportunity. However, other fields of animal production are included, too, as reports of the use of acidifiers in drinking water in poultry or the inclusion of organic acid salts in aquaculture feed prove. 

Reliable estimates of future supplies remain difficult to obtain due to the lack of information on the ecology of new sites, the productivity of the local Artemia population, and on technical and economic studies related to accessibility, sustainable quantities, characteristics of the resource relevant to larviculture, etc. (see for example Marden et al, 2012). Diversification of resources remains a most important issue, along with the further rationalization of the use of Artemia. As a net result of all the factors that play on the aquaculture market, the global demand for cysts, currently -2500-3000 tons/year, is expected to increase further. China is the main consumer (and will continue to be so) with an annual consumption of -1500 tons, of which about one half is imported from Russia and Kazakhstan and the other half produced domestically (mainly from inland lakes Bohai Bay has had a relatively stable production over the past years of about 400 tons of raw product).
