Applications impregnation

Compared with the three other semi-finished materials, the tapes are fully consolidated (Fig. 7.16), that is, the micro and macro impregnation are completely done. FuUy consolidated tapes are available on the market with fiber volume contents of up to 60% and even higher. Due to the not applicable impregnation process the winding speed can be higher in comparison to the other winding patterns. The heating zone melts the polymer and the tension (Fig. 7.6) or compaction roller (Rg. 7.7) presses the filaments on the mandrel. [Pg.198]

Electronic and Electrical Applications. Sulfolane has been tested quite extensively as the solvent in batteries (qv), particularly for lithium batteries. This is because of its high dielectric constant, low volatUity, exceUent solubilizing characteristics, and aprotic nature. These batteries usuaUy consist of anode, cathode polymeric material, aprotic solvent (sulfolane), and ionizable salt (145—156). Sulfolane has also been patented for use in a wide variety of other electronic and electrical appHcations, eg, as a coil-insulating component, solvent in electronic display devices, as capacitor impregnants, and as a solvent in electroplating baths (157—161). [Pg.70]

We provide in Table 25.1 a brief comparison of the different types of dielectrics in use for impregnation and insulation while forming capacitor elements. The table will also help make a proper choice of the dielectric and the type of capacitors for a particular application. [Pg.812]

Such types of loads may require special design of capacitor elements and their dielectric impregnation, cooling arrangement, size of shell or surface treatment. For all these applications therefore it is important to know the actual operating conditions, behaviour and characteristic of the load and its duty cycle before selecting the capacitors. [Pg.818]

There are less exotic ways of increasing the strength of cement and concrete. One is to impregnate it with a polymer, which fills the pores and increases the fracture toughness a little. Another is by fibre reinforcement (Chapter 25). Steel-reinforced concrete is a sort of fibre-reinforced composite the reinforcement carries tensile loads and, if prestressed, keeps the concrete in compression. Cement can be reinforced with fine steel wire, or with glass fibres. But these refinements, though simple, greatly increase the cost and mean that they are only viable in special applications. Plain Portland cement is probably the world s cheapest and most successful material. [Pg.215]

Cured phenolics are universally brittle in nature. This is true of both resoles and novolacs and does not depend much on the source of methylene used to promote cure. Consequently, the fillers used in molded articles are highly important to the design of the manufactured product. With resoles, the fiber or filler are usually the primary component of the final composite, with the resole acting as a binder or impregnating agent. With novolacs the resin may be the major component in the molded part. Poly-silanes and other organic polymers are also added in some applications to promote impact resistance and toughness [192]. [Pg.925]

It is of special interest for many applications to consider adsorption of fiuids in matrices in the framework of models which include electrostatic forces. These systems are relevant, for example, to colloidal chemistry. On the other hand, electrodes made of specially treated carbon particles and impregnated by electrolyte solutions are very promising devices for practical applications. Only a few attempts have been undertaken to solve models with electrostatic forces, those have been restricted, moreover, to ionic fiuids with Coulomb interactions. We would hke to mention in advance that it is clear, at present, how to obtain the structural properties of ionic fiuids adsorbed in disordered charged matrices. Other systems with higher-order multipole interactions have not been studied so far. Thermodynamics of these systems, and, in particular, peculiarities of phase transitions, is the issue which is practically unsolved, in spite of its great importance. This part of our chapter is based on recent works from our laboratory [37,38]. [Pg.337]

The films are generally dark in colour and often show a fine network of cracks due to differential expansion of oxide and metal on warming to ambient temperature. They are generally left unsealed, since sealing markedly reduces abrasion resistance, but may be impregnated with silicone oils to improve the frictional properties. Applications include movable instrument parts, pump bodies and plungers, and textile bobbins. [Pg.689]
