APPLICATIONS FOR RECYCLED PLASTICS

The building and construction plastics account only for 3% of overall collectable plastic waste in Western Europe in 2002, of which about 8% is mechanically recycled within Europe on a regular basis. There continue to be perception issues over some species of flame retardants, specifically relating to persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity (PBT). Most of these PBT issues are legislatively mandated in the European Union (EU), but these issues are beginning to show up at the state level in the United States and at the national level in Japan and a few other Pacific Rim nations. In addition to PBT issues, there is an increased requirement for recycling plastics used in commercial products, which is most prevalent in the area of information technology equipment (ITE). ITE sale and use in the EU is covered by the Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) protocol, which dictates that plastics used for ITE need to be either recycled or incinerated after use. Comparing Table 2.8 to Table 2.3, apart from the food contact restrictions, the applications for recyclates are quite similar to the applications for virgin materials. Mixed plastic waste (MPW) appears in this table. This is a material consisting of various plastic wastes rather than just one single polymer type. In Chapter 1, chemical recycling and energy recovery were introduced as alternatives to mechanical recycling. We have seen how plastics can be reprocessed if they are pure streams, if they can be sorted, or if suitable blends can be obtained. We have also seen potential applications for mixed plastics where the quality of the final product is reduced, but the inherent properties of all plastics such as rot-resistance can be utilised. An example of this is in wood replacement applications. However, material that is highly contaminated and mixed may be difficult or perhaps even impossible to recycle mechanically. Wood flours are used as a reinforcing material for thermoplastics, thermosets, and elastomers. Some wood fiber-thermoplastic materials can be recycled repeatedly with no significant change in performance. Commercially wood flours have long been used in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) compounds for flooring tile. The main applications for wood-plastic compounds are decking, consumer goods, and housewares. [Pg.50]

For recycling uses, degradable polyesters are desirable for relatively small mass applications, such as glues, thin coatings or labels, in order to facilitate the rapid cleaning of the primary structure for recycling. These applications may be rigid structures such as plastic containers or modifiers for paper products. [Pg.597]

Suitably recycled plastics can have properties that are good enough for many applications, with a noticeable economic advantage. Table 3.22 compares properties of virgin and recycled polyamides. These data are examples only and cannot be considered as representative. [Pg.215]

Degradable plastics do not represent the only route to an improved environment. Plastics can be collected after use for recycle and/or incineration.(8) Collection looms as a problem for both approaches, and separation of plastic types is needed for recycling to be successful. Without debating the pros and cons of recycling, incineration, and degradable plastics, it does seem likely that all three will play an important part in a cleaner environment. Each will offer particular advantages for certain applications of plastics. [Pg.3]

Tn municipal recycling contamination occurs whether or not vinyl is present. Other resins are just as much a contamination problem as vinyl. Except for commingled plastics applications, different plastic materials cannot be mixed successfully in most recycled products applications. This is why it is crucial to separate efficiently one plastic from another. [Pg.1688]
