Plastics, as construction

The increasing use of plastics as construction materials has led to a renewed interest in decorative finishes for plastic products. There are a wide variety of secondary operations that can be used for adding decoration to molded parts. Progress is also being made in providing decorative surfaces in the mold itself. The first use of this is in woodlike panels for wall decoration and furniture parts such as cabinet doors. [Pg.553]

Finally, for practical reasons it is useful to classify polymeric materials according to where and how they are employed. A common subdivision is that into structural polymers and functional polymers. Structural polymers are characterized by - and are used because of - their good mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties. Hence, they are primarily used as construction materials in addition to or in place of metals, ceramics, or wood in applications like plastics, fibers, films, elastomers, foams, paints, and adhesives. Functional polymers, in contrast, have completely different property profiles, for example, special electrical, optical, or biological properties. They can assume specific chemical or physical functions in devices for microelectronic, biomedical applications, analytics, synthesis, cosmetics, or hygiene. [Pg.5]

Collection. Procedures commonly used to collect vapor-phase organic compounds include whole-air, cryogenic, adsorption, absorption, and de-rivatization methods. Whole-air sampling involves the capture of an air parcel in a container. Stainless steel canisters or plastic bags constructed from an inert material, such as Teflon or Tedlar, are most commonly used. Each of... [Pg.286]

Co. Ltd (SPR) was founded to recycle the waste plastics collected in Sapporo city, where 13 500 t has been baled every year. This system has received excellent support by Sapporo city. However, only half of the baled plastics is used in the SPR liquefaction plant located just next to the baling plant due to the tender system controlled by JCPRA. Thus, the operating ratio of the SPR plant is not so high, and this also raises the treatment cost of waste plastics, as does the small scale. The remaining half is used for the iron and steel industry, far from Sapporo. The third liquefaction plant constructed at Mikasa city, Hokkaido stopped this March, since sufficient raw plastic waste could not be obtained. [Pg.670]

Although glass containers are very suitable for Hb packaging, flexible plastic containers constructed from materials such as poly(ethylene-vinyl acetate) (EVA) are most widely used. The plastic packaging material must be carefully selected. Hemoglobin, like other proteins, is lipophilic and can facilitate extraction of low molecular weight lipophilic substances, such as the plasticizers used in poly(vinyl chloride) containers. [Pg.357]

Tin is frequently used in the production of aerosol cans by electroplating it onto sheet steel to improve corrosion resistance and facilitate soldering. In contrast, aluminum is used in its pure form as foil. Often, aluminum foil is used as an impermeable layer in a multilayer laminate that may include paper and plastics as well. Aluminum foil can be formed into rigid containers, semirigid containers, blister construction, or laminates. [Pg.2531]

Almost all metals are used in the manufacture of Interpack packing units (Fig. 355) which are available in sizes 10/10/0.3 20/25/0.4 and 30/35/0.8 mm [132], They are characterized by a relatively small pressure drop. Plastics are under consideration as constructional material. [Pg.427]

In this chapter, possible chemical toxics in the indoors atmosphere as related to the existence of some plastics, and treated plastics, as well as rubber construction materials (which may also be referred to as indoor chemical contaminants) will only be outlined, with some additional general brief information about radon and its effects. Hence, biological contamination will be totally ignored although in over 40% of the cases, there... [Pg.141]
