Of all these formulations, it is the diverse semisolids that stand out as being uniquely topical. Semisolid systems fulfill a special topical need as they cling to the surface of the skin to which they are applied, generally until being washed off or worn off. In contrast, fluid systems have poor substantivity and readily streak and run off the desired area. Similarly, powders have poor staying properties. Importantly, the fundamental physicochemical characteristics of solutions, liquid emulsions and suspensions, and powders are independent of their route of application, and are discussed adequately elsewhere in this text and need not be reconsidered. This is not to say the compositions of such systems cannot be uniquely topical, for there are chemicals that can be safely applied to the... [Pg.219]

The monomers used to make an addition polymer need not be identical. When two or more different monomers are polymerized into the same chain, the product is a copolymer. For instance, we routinely copolymerize ethylene with small percentages of other monomers such as a-olefins (e.g., 1-butene and 1-hexene) and vinyl acetate. We call the products of these reactions linear low density polyethylenes and ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, respectively. We encounter these copolymers in such diverse applications as cling film, food storage containers, natural gas distribution pipes, and shoe insoles. [Pg.23]

As cast or blown films we encounter polyethylene in packaging films, bags, cling film, greenhouse skins, diaper back sheets, and high altitude scientific balloons. In these applications... [Pg.299]

Endrin does not dissolve very well in water. It has been found in ground water and surface water, but only at very low levels. It is more likely to cling to the bottom sediments of rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water. Endrin is generally not found in the air except when it was applied to fields during agricultural applications. [Pg.14]

According to information supplied by the vendor in 1996, the dry ice pellets used in the Cryogenesis system cost between 15 and 30 cents per pound. The system uses from 100 to 150 lb of pellets per hour. More dry ice is required for paint stripping applications, and less for oil film and clinging dirt removal (D15397T). [Pg.485]

Semisolid systems fulfill a special topical need by being able to cling to the surface of application. Such systems are plastic in behavior, which allows semisolids to be mechanically spread uniformly over a surface as an immobile film. For the production of lipid-free ointments, pastes, and creams, several gel-forming polysaccharides are being used. As an emulsifier they can provide a three-dimensional matrix which... [Pg.5]

Cause San Jose scale. Clusters of these sucking insects cling to bark and appear as small gray bumps that can be easily scraped off with a fingernail. Control with late winter application of dormant oil spray. See page 23 for an illustration of this pest. [Pg.26]

Emollients can easily be rubbed off hands and feet, particularly in bed when they may damage bedclothes. This can be reduced by wearing cotton gloves after application and by wrapping the feet in cling film and wearing socks. [Pg.251]

Build of significant low shear viscosity is used in many applications, and contributes significantly to formulation properties such as the vertical cling and the ability to suspend particles in a matrix. The obvious use of particle suspension is in slurries, where stability of the suspension over time is required. However, it is clear that this ability to suspend can also be applied to emulsions, which are simply suspensions of one immiscible liquid phase in another. As such, acrylic polymers... [Pg.119]
