Topcoats. For some applications such as chest freezers or vacuum cleaners, alkyds are still employed. These evolved from oil-modified types to the oil-free polyesters that have good stain resistance, high gloss, and excellent flexibility. The GMA clear coatings have outstanding exterior durability, hence their acceptance in the automotive sector (see Fig. 2). Pigmented GMA acrylic powders have not foimd widespread use in market areas other than automotive, eg, architectural applications. Hydroxyl functional acrylic resins cured with blocked isocyanates or uretdione-based curatives have also found use in automotive applications and their exterior durability is only somewhat less than that of the GMA acrylic powders (50). Carboxyl functional acrylic resins are also commercially available. They can be cured with TGIC for exterior applications or with bisphenol A epoxy resins. The latter combinations are sometimes called acrylic-epoxy hybrid coating powders and are noted for their excellent hardness, stain, and chemical resistance. They find use primarily in appliance coatings (79). 

A variety of miscellaneous end uses take advantages of GMS s oil resistance, colorability, and weather and ozone resistance. Grades based on LDPE find use in nnmerous coating applications such as awnings, gas hose, escalator handrails, and mbber boats. GSMs are also used for curb pump hose, mining cable jackets, and appliance wire jackets. Grades based on ethylene vinyl acetate polymers are nsed for traffic paints and marine paint. 

The majority of domestic appliance enamels are white, and most have high opacity in order to cover the substrate in a one coat application. Typical pigment/binder ratios are 1/1 w/w for titanium dioxide. 10-15% of an epoxy resin is normally included to aid cure and adhesion to the substrate.

Some of the nonrubber applications are as a chemical intermediate to make adiponitrile and hexamethylenediamine, precursors to making Nylon 66 whose primary application is carpeting. Other nonrubber applications are styrene-butadiene latexes for paper coatings and carpet backing, and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resins for plastic pipe and automotive/appliance parts.
