Referring to US Patent 6,015, 832 (Table 1), an emulsion was prepared from the disclosure and the activity tested against P. ageruinosa and Escherichia coli bacteria. The results are reported in Table 4.2 from plate tests and an image of each agar plate is appended (Fig. A4.1). The emulsions were prepared again for reproducibility, and the tests were repeated (without dilution) in Table 4.3 with similar results. 

All three MGd-fluorophores could be observed in imaging studies with Jurkat-T lymphoma cells as a result of the fluorescence produced by the marker fluorophores (Fig. 6). The cells displayed punctate localization predominantly, as would be expected for retention that is primarily in cellular vesicles or lysosomes. Importantly, fluorescence from the MGd core could not be seen under standard CFM conditions. This means that the paramagnetic Gd(lll) center does not quench the fluorescence of the appended fluorophore. ft also highlights the fact that these new conjugates are potentially far more effective as detectable targeting agents then MGd alone.

A closely related technique can be used for multi-slice imaging (Fig. 6.2.7) [Fral]. The scheme of Fig. 6.2.5(c) is appended by further slice-selective 90° pulses with different centre frequencies, so that the magnetization of other slices is selected [Fral]. In this way, the otherwise necessary recycle delay can effectively be used for acquisition of additional slices. However, the contrast in each slice is affected by a different Ty weight, because is different for each slice. The technique can readily be adapted to line-scan imaging by applying successive slice-selective pulses in orthogonal gradients [Finl].

Polymer chains can be appended at a uniformly high density across the porous membrane of a hollow-fiber form. Plain abdominal radiographs have been used as the first imaging technique in suspected appendicitis. However, its diagnostic accuracy is limited. 

Color Doppler US may be useful in easily identifying the inflamed appendix.
