Apologies, and Acknowledgments

It is clear that much remains to be done in this field, but we believe that this review also summarizes a considerable level of understanding. 

We want to emphasize that the foregoing review was not meant to be exhaustive, and is almost entirely limited to results in dilute, aqueous solution. We apologize in advance to those authors whose important work has been overlooked. We know of no practical, systematic way to search the literature for the sort of results we have summarized.

Finally, the authors acknowledge with apology and regret the omission of many significant contributions to the titled area, due in part to the vastness of the literature and the limitations of space. 

Much of the material presented in this book is based on the direct experience of the authors. This would not have been possible without the hard work and input of our colleagues, students and post-doctoral fellows. We sincerely want to acknowledge each of them for their good research and contributions without which we would not have been able to treat such a broad range of subjects. Some of them read chapters or helped in other ways. We also owe thanks to the chemometrics community and at the same time we have to offer apologies. We have had the opportunity of collaborating with many colleagues and we have profited from the research and publications of many others. Their ideas and work have made this book possible and necessary. The size of the book shows that they have been very productive. Even so, we have cited only a fraction of the literature and we have not included the more sophisticated work. Our wish was to consolidate and therefore to explain those methods that have become more or less accepted, also to... 

Acknowledgments Several review articles cover in much greater details numerous NMR applications that have been reported in the past years on the use of NMR spectroscopy in the drug discovery process and to monitor target-ligand interactions. The author apologizes if he was unable to mention properly all this work within the limited space of this article.

Lacasse and Leo s criticism, and the reply to it, were published in JAMA in October 2008. Five months later Leo and Lacasse wrote another commentary on the JAMA article and sent it to the British Medical Journal. They recounted the story of having wondered about the comparison between Lexapro and problemsolving therapy and noted the results of the comparison that had been published in response to their questioning. They also mentioned an apparent conflict of interest involving financial connections between Robert Robinson, the lead author of the study, and Forest Pharmaceuticals, the US manufacturer of Lexapro. Robinson acknowledged the conflict of interest and apologized for not having disclosed it.4... 

We apologize to researchers whose primary observations that form the basis for our current knowledge in this active field could not be cited due to space limitations, or have been acknowledged indirectly by citing review articles, only. Our work was supported by grants from Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (Br 999), Deutsche Krebshilfe (10-2008-Br2) and the Sander Foundation (2002.088.1). 

The book has a conventional sequential organization. Equations, figures, tables and footnotes are numbered sequentially within each chapter. Footnotes elaborate on the text. The references serve to provide a source of more details, to acknowledge the original source where appropriate, and to enable the interested reader to examine an alternative or a complementary point of view. We sincerely apologize if your favorite reference is not included. We did not mean (nor is it humanly feasible) to be exhaustive when such a broad area, with so many excellent papers, is covered.
