Apitz-Castro

During the early part of my scientihc work, I spent 17 years as a professor in the Department of Chemistry at Indiana University. During that period, I had, among others, two talented coworkers Mahendra Jain as a post-doctoral fellow and Rafael Apitz-Castro as a visiting professor from the Institute Venezolano de Investigaciones Cientificas (IVIC) in Caracas, Venezuela. These two former coworkers did the most important work on ajoene. It is always great to see former colleagues go on to do important work. [Pg.98]

The mechanism by which thrombin activates phospholipase is presently unknown. Touqui et have provided evidence for the presence of the phospholipase A2 inhibitor, lipocortin, in blood platelets and have suggested that its phosphorylation during the platelets response to thrombin relieves inhibition and allows arachidonic acid release. On the other hand, Apitz-Castro d al. have suggested that phosphatidic acid (made available subsequent to phospholipase C acting on phosphoinositides) changes the state of organization of the phospholipids in the platelet membrane making them more susceptible to attack by phospholipase A2. [Pg.6]

Ajoene was discovered as the most potent platelet inhibitor from an oil-macerated crushed garlic (Apitz-Castro et al 1983), and they revealed that ajoene inhibited both of the arachidonate metabolism and the membrane G-protein level signal transduction of platelets (Apitz-Castro eta/. 1986a, 1986b, 1988). [Pg.444]
