Apiezon grease

Lubrication of all ground glass surfaces is essential for distillations under reduced pressure. Suitable lubricants are Apiezon grease L, M or N and Silicone stopcock grease also Alkathene (a polyethylene plastic), which is especially suitable for high temperatures. 

Instmmental methods of analysis provide information about the specific composition and purity of the amines. QuaUtative information about the identity of the product (functional groups present) and quantitative analysis (amount of various components such as nitrile, amide, acid, and deterruination of unsaturation) can be obtained by infrared analysis. Gas chromatography (gc), with a Hquid phase of either Apiezon grease or Carbowax, and high performance Hquid chromatography (hplc), using siHca columns and solvent systems such as isooctane, methyl tert-huty ether, tetrahydrofuran, and methanol, are used for quantitative analysis of fatty amine mixtures. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (nmr), both proton ( H) and carbon-13 ( C), which can be used for quaHtative and quantitative analysis, is an important method used to analyze fatty amines (8,81).

Commercially available Apiezon greases are usually orange colored prior to cleanup and colorless afterwards. Exhaustive hydrogenation can be used to saturate aromatic and olefinic groups to produce a more stable product, Apiezon MB, having properties more typical of a saturated hydrocar]x>n phase [18].. ... 

It was found that waxes based on long-chain alcohols were promising, esters gave promise if in a high hydrocarbon mixt, such as apiezon grease or the residue from the distln of vaseline was incorporated... 

The reaction can be carried out in a round-bottomed glass flask fitted with a still head, the arm of which is attached to a trap immersed in a cooling bath of ice. Owing to the reactivity of arsenic(III) fluoride, the apparatus should be well dried, and the use of rubber or cork stoppers must be avoided. A thermometer can be inserted into the still head by means of a ground-glass joint lightly lubricated with Apiezon grease L, which reacts only very slowly with the vapor.3... 

The checkers report that ordinary Lubriseal mixed with graphite is a suitable substitute for the Apiezon grease.

B. 10% (by weight) Apiezon grease M, suspended on 60/80 mesh firebrick, used at a temperature of 80° and a nitrogen flow rate of 20 cc. per minute. Column length was 6 feet, diameter and materials as in A. 

In a 30-mL, three-neck flask fitted with a thermometer, a magnetic stirrer, an inlet tube for Nj, and a reflux condenser was placed a mixture of 1-bromo-l-fluorocyclopropane (1.3-3.2g), tri- or dibutylsilane (1.4-3.0 equiv), and a small amount of radical initiator [AIBN or (/-BuO)2J. It was stirred under N2 at 100 to 140 C for 1 to 7 h. The isomer ratio of the fluorocyclopropanes was determined by GC (5% Apiezon Grease L on 60/80 Celite 545 at 80-100 C) before product isolation by distillation was carried out. 

The reaction products were analyzed by conventional gas chromatography using 20% Apiezon grease or 5% Silicone OV-17 packings (Kogyo Inc.), and acenaphthene was used as an internal standard. The reaction products were identified by comparing their retention times with those obtained for known samples. The simple Hiickel calculations were performed on a microcomputer (NEC Corporation model PC-9801VM2).
