Apiezon-N grease

Thickness Measurement. The thickness of poly(I) at different coverages was obtained using a Tencor alpha-step 100 surface profile measuring system. Electrodes used were glass slides coated with Pt by electron beam evaporation. In order to produce a "step" across which the stylus of the surface profiler was drawn, Apiezon N grease was applied to part of the electrode surface and was removed with CH2CI2 after derivatization with poly(I). 

The electrolysis cell consists of a 50-mL polyethylene beaker with two small holes drilled about 6 mm from the bottom and on opposite sides. Two platinum wires about 25 mm in length are used as electrodes. They are held in place with Apiezon N grease. The electrode-electrode separation is approximately 5 mm. The power source is a 1.5 V dry cell. 

Initially, 1.3 g (2.1 X 10-3 mole) of Cs2 [Pt(CN)4] H20 is dissolved in 7 mL of water to produce a saturated solution (it may be necessary to warm the solution slightly to dissolve the Cs2[Pt(CN)4] H20). The solution is transferred to a 50-mL polyethylene beaker and 1.7 g (1.1 X 10-2 mole) of cesium fluoride is added. The white CsF appears to become yellow after it is added. It then dissolves, leaving a white suspension. Finally, 7.6 M CsOH is added to the solution dropwise to raise the pH from approximately 4 to 9 ( 0.2). The pH of 9 must be carefully maintained throughout the reaction. All manipulations of volatile reactants and products are accomplished with a standard Pyrex vacuum system. Kel-F stopcock grease is inert to the species to be handled and is recommended though it is somewhat thin. Apiezon(N) tends to darken rapidly on contact with phosphorus(V) fluorides, but can be used successfully for short periods of time and for manipulations necessary for rough transfer and purification. 

These reactions require vacuum line techniques. Vacuum lines incorporating greaseless stopcocks are preferred over those greased with Kel-F or Apiezon N silicone grease reacts rapidly and must be avoided.

Available from Halocarbon Products Corp., 82 Burlews Court, Hackensack, N.J., Series 25-10M. Apiezon N stopcock grease is attacked by bromine but was successfully used by the checkers. Do not use paints, glues, or other goos without careful consideration of their effect on vacuum integrity. Apiezon vacuum greases L, M, and N have a long history as reliable lubricants with low outgassing rates, and Apiezon Wax W ( Black Wax ) and Q Compound are useful as short-term solutions for leaks when dismantling for more permanent repair is not practical. 

Lubrication of all ground glass surfaces is essential for distillations under reduced pressure. Suitable lubricants are Apiezon grease L, M or N and Silicone stopcock grease also Alkathene (a polyethylene plastic), which is especially suitable for high temperatures. 

Commercially available Apiezon greases are usually orange colored prior to cleanup and colorless afterwards. Exhaustive hydrogenation can be used to saturate aromatic and olefinic groups to produce a more stable product, Apiezon MB, having properties more typical of a saturated hydrocar]x>n phase [18].. ...
