Antidotes recommendations

There is no antidote recommended for poisoning by BCME. Administration of free radical scavengers should alleviate the toxicity. 

Since iodine monochloride attacks cork and rubber, the use of an all-glass apparatus is recommended. If it should come into contact with the skin, an elective antidote is dilute hydrochloric acid (1 1). 

The earliest practical use of an expert system was made in the software named MYCIN for diagnosing a toxic poison from the symptoms of a patient and recommending the antidote (62). This type of activity is generally carried out by a human expert who processes information about a situation (in this case, symptoms of a patient), refers to the expert s experience and expert knowledge, and then recommends action (in this case, the antidote).

Data for PCP and terrestrial wildlife are incomplete and — in view of the large interspecies variations in sensitivity — need to be collected. Research is needed on reproductive effects in animals following inhalation exposure to PCP additional acute and intermediate toxicity testing chronic duration exposure studies on cancer induction, genotoxicity, and immunotoxicity and the development of alternate biomarkers of PCP exposure and antidotes (WHO 1987 USPHS 1994). Until the results of these studies become available, it seems reasonable to apply to wildlife the same levels recommended for human health protection. 

Acute poisoning only occurs when the detoxification mechanism is overwhelmed. This reaction is enhanced by giving sodium thiosulfate and sodium nitrate intravenously as 20% solutions in a 3 1 ratio, which is a recommended antidote for acute cyanide poisoning. It is the thiocyanate metabolite that causes chronic disease when cyanide forage is ingested over an extended period.

Treatment No specific antidote some authorities recommend the nitrite portion of the conventional cyanide antidote kit. 

Hydrogen cyanide can be purchased from Fumico Inc., Amarillo, Texas. When large amounts of HCN are used, it is recommended that amyl nitrite pearls and an oxygen cylinder with mask be available. These in combination are effective antidotes for HCN poisoning. The checkers prepared HCN according to the method of K. Ziegler.4 The use of smaller quantities of HCN results in slower reaction and reduced yield. 

The percentage of ingestions for which a specific antidote (or "antipoison") does exist is small. Where a specific antidote can be used, it is vital that it be administered as early as possible with close attention to the recommended dosage. Antidotes can be categorized as to their mechanism of action.
