Anti-acne creams

Anti-acne creams have been shown to cause systemic toxic effects. For example, retinoic acid is a known teratogen (Steele et al. 1983) and is found in certain formulations. Other formulations contain clindamycin, which is reviewed below. 

As of 1991 in the United States, OTC antiacne preparations may contain only a few active dmgs, for example, sulfur [7704-34-9] resorcinol acetate [102-29-4], resorcinol [108-46-3], salicylic acid [69-72-7], and some combinations (52). OTC anti-acne constituents maybe included in a variety of conventional cosmetic preparations, which then become OTC dmgs. These include lotions, creams, solutions, facial makeups, facial cleansers (including abrasive cleansers), and astringents. Products must contain the specified dmgs at the designated concentrations. Compositions of antiacne products have beenpubhshed (53). 

The results of a TCA-SAS peel also depend on the quality and consistent use of cosmeceuticals after the peel. It is clear that a melasma treatment will produce better results if the TCA-SAS peel is followed by the application of a retinol-anti-tyrosinase-anti-oxidant cream or a hydro-quinone-based preparation. For acne or aging or sagging skin, the same comments apply as for AHAs above. These creams can be applied as soon as flaking is finished, usually on the 7th day. 

Aqueous and hydroalcohoUc extracts of both red and white peony roots are used in skin care products for their antimicrobial (acne creams, etc.), anti-inflammatory, and astringent properties used with Dahurian angelica (see that entry) in freckle-removal creams and lotions for their traditional ability to remove blood stasis and activate blood circulation also used as part of a n natural preservative system in cosmetic products due to its relatively high content of benzoic acid (etic zhou). 

Extracts used in skin care products (esp. skin freshener, acne creams and lotions, etc.) for their astringent, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects (etic zhou) also used in toothpaste. 

Adapalene, a third-generation retinoid, is a retinoid-mimetic com-ponnd (a naphthoic acid derivative), available as 0.1% gel, cream, alcoholic solntion, and pledgets. It has selective affinity for retinoic acid receptor (RAR) subtypes RAR- 8 and RAR-y fonnd in the epidermis," " " and has comedolytic, keratolytic, and anti-inflammatory activity. " " " Vehicle-controlled and comparative stndies have demonstrated the utility of adapalene in treatment of acne." " " Adapalene is indicated for mild to moderate acne vnlgaris. Adapalene 0.1% gel may be used as an alternative to tretinoin 0.025% gel to achieve better tolerability in some patients." " Adapalene coadministered with a topical or oral antibiotic represents arational therapy for moderate forms of acne."... 

Tazarotene is used in the treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris and has comedolytic, keratolytic, and anti-inflammatory action. Tazarotene 0.1% and 0.05% gel and cream have been shown to be more effective than vehicle in the treatment of acne vulgaris." " The 0.1% gel was slightly more effective than the 0.05% gel in decreasing lesion counts, with treatment snccess rates of 68% and 51% of patients, respectively. ...

Powder and extracts used in hair-care and skin-care products, (especially acne and whitening creams), often together with Dahurian angelica, for many of the same functions (e.g., antiallergic, anti-inflammatory, and tyrosinase inhibitory) as Sichuan lovage also imparts special aroma to products.
