Jean Rodriguez was born in Gieza, Spain, on 25 June 1958, and in 1959 his family emigrated to France. After studying chemistry at the University Paul Cezanne in Marseille, France, he completed his PhD as a CNRS student with Prof. B. Waegell and Prof. P. Brun in 1987. He completed his Habilitation in 1992, also at Marseille, where he is currently Professor and Director of the UMR-CNRS-6178-SYMBIO. His research interests include the development of domino and multicomponent reactions, and their applications in stereoselective synthesis. In 1998, he was awarded the Acros prize in Organic Chemistry from the French Chemical Society.

The artist Paul Klee (1961) describes the period just before art is made as a nowhere existent something or a somewhere existent nothing (p. 4), which, once established by the artist, leaps into a new order. In Cezanne s account of making art, he depicts an assemblage of himself and the world to be painted and from which there needs to be some onergence ...

Other routes to enantiomerically-pure amines have been put forward. Knowing that CAL-B would selectively acylate just the R enantiomer of the racemic a-methyl primary amine 22, Stephane Gastaldi, Gerard Gil and Michele P. Bertrand of the Universite Paul Cezanne devised (Organic Lett. 2007, 9, 837) a thiyl-based method for equilibrating 22, leading to a net deracemizing acylation.
