Johnson, Jack

John Raven Johnson, known as Jack Johnson to all his friends, was a member of the first Board of Directors of Organic Syntheses when it was incorporated in the state of New York, December 11, 1939 He continued membership for about 20 years Prior to this, Jack served for about 8 years on the Active Board of Editors, soliciting preparations and checking them He was Editor-in-Chief of two annual volumes, Vol XVI (1936) and Vol XIX (1939) He also served on the Advisory Board of Editors until his death... 

In 1927, Jack Johnson became assistant professor at Cornell University thus starting a career which extended almost 40 years at that school He restructured the courses in organic chemistry and developed a broad program of research His enthusiasm and personal contributions led to his promotion to full professor in 1930 when he was barely 30 years old... 

Adams hired Carothers to stay on as an instructor, the lowest rung on the academic ladder, for 1800 a year. Carothers class lectures were low-key and conversational, like his written articles, but his students worked overtime. When one climbed through a laboratory window on Thanksgiving Day, he found the rest of his classmates already there. Carothers, Carl Marvel, Jack Johnson, and several graduate students formed an informal seminar group to talk chemistry over bootleg beer. 

As a fledgling faculty member at Harvard that fall, Carothers was somewhat surprised by its working conditions. In a cheery letter to Jack Johnson, Carothers related how a chemistry assistant pried ten thumbtacks out of the Harvard administration. The assistant was permitted to put in a requisition for thumb tacks to the number of ten (10), said thumb tacks to be purchased by the University and given to the assistant for use in connection with Chemistry 5, and the cost (purchase price + expenses incurred in their purchase) to be pro rated among the students of the course charged to their individual accounts. ...
