As energy costs have escalated in recent years, the use of high moisture food by-products in commercial animal feeds has also escalated, particularly in beef catde and dairy rations, as a means of reducing production costs. Because of the broad activity spectrum, sorbates are extremely effective in the preservation of wet by-products, eg, brewers and distillers grains, beet pulp, citrus pulp, and condensed whey (139). [Pg.287]

Products and Uses A pesticide in animal feed, cattle feed concentrate blocks (nonmedicated), citrus pulp (dehydrated), grapes, packaging materials, and safflower oil. Used as an insecticide for flies, insects, head lice, and mosquitos. [Pg.197]

Torula yeast Torulopsis utilis) is a hardy type of yeast that can be propagated on a variety of substrates, such as press liquor obtained during the manufacture of dried citrus pulp, molasses, sulphite waste liquor from the paper industry, saccharified wood (both hexoses and pentoses can be used), and fruit wastes such as coffee beans, apples, etc. While brewers yeast is truly a by-product food, torula yeast is cultured specifically as a foodstuff for man and animals. [Pg.1024]

The main carbon source for production of SCP is petroleum. It has been practised in many companies around the world. Other potential substrates for SCP include bagasse, citrus wastes, sulphite waste liquor from pulp and paper, molasses, animal manure, whey, starch, sewage and agricultural wastes. [Pg.333]

Citrus (oranges, lemons, grapefruit) is processed into juice and oil for human uses and into molasses and dried pulp for use as animal feed. The fruit is first washed with a detergent and rinsed with water. The oil is localized in oil sacs on the surface of the fruit. The surface is scarified under a water spray to form an emulsion of oil and water. The oil is recovered by centrifugation. Altered to remove high melting point fats, and dried with sodium sulfate, which is removed by filtration. [Pg.218]
