Important question about units for hydrogen production rate arises. In the literature different units are used. They can be classified as specific rate per unit of culture, specific volumetric rates, and rates produced by one unit of illuminated surface. [Pg.58]

The costs and benefits of various agricultural practices must be based on local values and local constraints, causing sustainable practices to be region and culture specific (Tilman et al. 2002) no universal recipe exists. [Pg.48]

Morus alba callus and cell suspension cultures specifically produce chalomoradn 5 and kuwanon J 6 from dnnamoylpolyketide intermediates. Administration of [2- C]cinnamic add AT-acetylcysteamine thioester to the M. alba cell cultures revealed the cinnamoyl CoA intermediate to be a significant precursor <99H(50)989>. For further biosynthetic investip-tions see <99H(51)231>. [Pg.135]

The main difference between hungers and emotions has been that hungers are more obviously controlled by the deprivation or supply of specific concrete stimuli. Even so, hungers for specific objects are extensively influenced by learned processes called tastes, and thus have some of the cultural specificity typical of emotions. To develop a taste for yak butter or blubber you must leam to associate their fatty flavor with satisfaction to develop a taste for an abused substance, you must come to associate the chemical taste of alcohol or the disgust and nausea of heroin injection with the euphoria of the high. [Pg.212]

For example, in certain cultures specific rites and rituals may involve a pain that is readily accepted by the people within that particular society. Scientists believe that people in these cultures experience that pain to a far lesser degree than others from different cultures would if they underwent the same experience. In such cases, the ability to focus on other aspects of the ritual, such as its social or religious ramifications, may act as a psychological sedative that helps the individual better tolerate the pain or, perhaps, feel no pain at all. The expectation of pain also determines how much pain is felt. Two people, for example, may go to the dentist the person who has greater anxiety about the experience is likely to feel a greater amount of pain. Tension and emotional states may also cause biochemical changes that lower the amount of endorphins (naturally occurring opiates) produced by the brain. [Pg.725]
