Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) sets standards for food safety and inspects meat, poultry, and egg products produced domestically and imported. The Service inspects animals and birds at slaughter and processed products at various stages of the production process, and analyzes products for microbiological and chemical adulterants. FSIS also informs the public about meat, poultry, and egg product food safety issues. FSIS works with the Research, Education and Economics mission area on food safety research issues and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service on instances where animal diseases impact food safety. FSIS also facilitates the management of US activities pertaining to the Codex Alimentarius Commission, an international organization created by the United Nations, to promote the health and economic interests of consumers while encouraging fair international trade in food. [Pg.45]

Halbert next turned to the feed he was aware of the possibility of pesticide contamination, but early analysis ruled out the usual culprits --DDT, dieldrin and PCBs, all of which peak early in gas chromatographic analysis. At this point Halbert s dairy farm was at stake. Scientists at Michigan s Department of Agriculture also failed in their search for a chemical clue, so Halbert turned to the USDA s National Animal Disease Center at Ames, Iowa. Here the accidental failure to switch off the GC apparatus during a lunch break revealed a "Rocky Mountain Range" of late peaks. At this critical point the bureaucratic genius of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service called off the investigation for lack of... [Pg.355]

Because of their very large potential for crop damage and for economic losses to the export market, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), as well as the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), is very concerned with the control of Tephritid species. With whole-herd applications of antimicrobial and antiparasitic substances and live vaccines in mind, ecotoxicity assessments have been included in the registration reqirements for veterinary products in the EEC and the USA. A defined procedure exists in the USA where a "Finding of no significant impact" (FONSI) certificate by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is a necessary prerequisite for the registration. [Pg.132]

Alternatively, if the treatment was carried out at the time of export, its effectiveness would have to be assumed, and could not be verified by inspection before export. This is not in the spirit or intent of the International Plant Protection Convention (Champ and Winks, 1982), and verification of treatment for quarantine or contractual arrangements would have to be done by documentation and/or colour dosimetry. For irradiation, this will require a change in approach, and there are now moves to base infestation assessment on prevention of reproduction . In this context, the US Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, in association with the North American Plant Protection Organization, has drafted a Regional Phytosanitary Standard for Use of Irradiation as a phytosanitary treatment (Griffin, 1996). [Pg.186]
