Androgens and anabolic steroids have been used in conjunction with dietary measures and exercises in an attempt to reverse protein loss after trauma, surgery, or prolonged immobilization and in patients with debilitating diseases.

The incidence of liver tumors following the use of androgens and anabolic steroids still cannot be calculated. What is clear is that if these products are used in high doses or over long periods of time (and there is now much doubt about whether they are more than marginally effective in such conditions as osteoporosis and aplastic anemia), techniques such as CT scanning and ultrasonography should be used routinely to ensure early detection of liver lesions. 

Many androgens and anabolic steroids reduce the dose of oral anticoagulant that a patient requires, sometimes by as much as 25% (73), and hemorrhage has sometimes resulted from their use. From the results of a study in which stanozolol reduced warfarin requirements, the investigators concluded that stanozolol increased fibrinolysis, reduced the production of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors, and increased the amount of the natural anticoagulant antithrombin III (74). 

In the United States, most of the androgens and anabolic steroid products are subject to control by the U.S. Federal Control Substances Act as amended by the Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 1990 as Schedule III drugs.
