Large difference in melting point and eutectic temperature improves controUabihty. [Pg.452]

Lithium hydride is perhaps the most usehil of the other metal hydrides. The principal limitation is poor solubiUty, which essentially limits reaction media to such solvents as dioxane and dibutyl ether. Sodium hydride, which is too insoluble to function efficiently in solvents, is an effective reducing agent for the production of silane when dissolved in a LiCl—KCl eutectic at 348°C (63—65). Magnesium hydride has also been shown to be effective in the reduction of chloro- and fluorosilanes in solvent systems (66) and eutectic melts (67). [Pg.23]

Most investigators have focused their attention on a differential segment of the zone between the feed injection and the crystal melter. Analysis of crystal formation and growth in the recoveiy section has received scant attention. Table 22-4 summarizes the scope of the literature treatment for center-fed columns for both solid-solution and eutectic forming systems. [Pg.1993]

Carbon steels as received "off the shelf" have been worked at high temperature (usually by rolling) and have then been cooled slowly to room temperature ("normalised"). The room-temperature microstructure should then be close to equilibrium and can be inferred from the Fe-C phase diagram (Fig. 11.1) which we have already come across in the Phase Diagrams course (p. 342). Table 11.1 lists the phases in the Fe-FejC system and Table 11.2 gives details of the composite eutectoid and eutectic structures that occur during slow cooling. [Pg.113]

Despite possible electron-acceptor B sp combining with the group I and II main-group elements, only metastable AIB2 phases, AgB2 and AUB2, are known, and the Ag-B and Au-B systems exhibit simple monotectics and eutectics, respectively. [Pg.201]

Tellurium has been tested as a cathode material for use in conjunction with an anode made of alkali metal, primarily lithium, in power sources with a high specific energy and power [99], The theoretical specific energy for Li/Te pair is 612 Wh kg High-temperature (470 °C) cells with Li, Te, and eutectic (LiF-LiCl-Lil) electrolyte in the molten state, or with more convenient, albeit more resistive, paste-type electrolytes, have been tested in the laboratory. Similar layouts have been proposed for utilizing the Li/Se pair (theoretic cal specific energy 1,210 W h kg ) with the cell ingredients in the molten state (365 C) or with paste electrolyte at a lower temperature. [Pg.334]

A brief discussion of sohd-liquid phase equihbrium is presented prior to discussing specific crystalhzation methods. Figures 20-1 and 20-2 illustrate the phase diagrams for binary sohd-solution and eutectic systems, respectively. In the case of binary solid-solution systems, illustrated in Fig. 20-1, the liquid and solid phases contain equilibrium quantities of both components in a manner similar to vapor-hquid phase behavior. This type of behavior causes separation difficulties since multiple stages are required. In principle, however, high purity... [Pg.3]

For an alloy droplet, the post-recalescence solidification involves segregated solidification and eutectic solidification. 619 Droplet cooling in the region (1),(2) and (6) can be calculated directly with the above-described heat transfer model. The nucleation temperature (the achievable undercooling) and the solid fraction evolution during recalescence and post-recalescence solidification need to be determined additionally on the basis of the rapid solidification kinetics. 154 156 ... [Pg.372]

Since the work of Edwards et al. a vast array of molten salts has been studied, including mixtures and eutectics [2-5]. Beyond the binary ionic melt there are two important factors affecting the local order of the system, namely, the covalency of the interaction between unlike ions and the stoichiometry... [Pg.74]

Crystallization, by definition, implies that the initial structure be a glass, followed by the nucleation and growth of a crystalline phase, be it the equilibrium one or a metastable phase. The process is a first-order transformation and involves atomic diffusion, or at least atomic shuttles. Types of crystallization reactions that occur include polymorphous crystallization, which is a composition invariant transformation such as that in Fe-B, and eutectic crystallization, T, in FeNiPB glass, where line lamellae of iron-nickel austenite and mclastable (FeNiJj PB phases grow cooperatively. [Pg.731]

Thermal transitions which are commonly observed in frozen systems are illustrated in Figure 7 where, for the sake of this discussion, a deflection upward indicates an endothermic transition. The glass transition is a shift in the baseline toward higher heat capacity. Crystallization during the DSC experiment is observed as an exothermic event, and eutectic melting is an endothermic transition which preceeds the melting of ice. [Pg.273]

The fit of model calculations to the experimental data (Figs. 3.2-3.5, 3.8, 3.11, 3.12) and the ability of the model to simulate critical equilibria such as peritectics and eutectics are a test of the internal consistency of the experimental data and the derived model. Because the special focus of this work is to develop a model for subzero temperatures, the fit of the model to data at subzero temperatures is especially important (Figs. 3.2 to 3.5). While these... [Pg.56]

The point C is known as eutectic point of the system. The temperature and composition corresponding to eutectic point are known as eutectic temperature and eutectic composition, respectively. The eutectic temperature and composition are 303° and 2.6% Ag and 97.4% Pb, respectively. [Pg.141]

It is instructive to consider the free-energy hierarchy and the metastable phase equilibria when crystallization of an amorphous material is discussed. Koster and Herold [56] discussed these aspects of crystallization and showed that crystallization reactions of amorphous alloys can be classified into the following three types polymorphic, primary and eutectic crystallization reactions. Among these three types, the slowest crystal growth process is expected for primary crystallization and thus, primary crystallization is ideal for tailoring fine microstructures upon decomposition of amorphous alloys. [Pg.390]

Examples of aromatic amines are shown in Fig. 5.5. Of these compounds the most common are mefa-phenylene diamine (MPDA), methylene dianiline (MDA), and eutectics of the two. [Pg.97]
