Eutectic compositions

Quantitative studies of solid-state organic reactions were performed by Glazman (267. 268). Equal amounts of acetic anhydride and 2-aminothiazole (grain diameter 0.15 mm) were mixed for 20 rain, and the mixture was heated in a glycerol bath at 0.5°C per minute. Heating curves showed that the reaction starts in the solid phase the use of an eutectic composition of organic reactants increases the yields. [Pg.52]

Only lead alloys containing copper below 0.08% have practical appHcations. Lead sheet, pipe, cable sheathing, wine, and fabricated products are produced from lead—copper alloys having copper contents near the eutectic composition. Lead—copper alloys in the range 0.03—0.08 wt % copper are covered by many specifications ASTM B29-92 (7), QQL 171 (United States), BS 334, HP2 Type 11 (Canada), DIN 1719 (Germany), and AS 1812 (Austraha). [Pg.60]

Because of the ease with which they can be soldered, electroplated tin—lead coatings of near eutectic composition (62 wt % tin) are extensively used in the electronics industry for coating printed circuit boards and electrical coimectors, lead wires, capacitor and condenser cases, and chassis. [Pg.61]

Both liquid and vapor phases are totally miscible. Conventional vapor/liqiiid eqiiilihriiim. Neither phase is pure. Separation factors are moderate and decrease as purity increases. Ultrahigh purity is difficult to achieve. No theoretical limit on recovery. Liquid phases are totally miscible solid phases are not. Eutectic system. Sohd phase is pure, except at eutectic point. Partition coefficients are very high (theoretically, they can be infinite). Ultrahigh purity is easy to achieve. Recovery is hmited by eutectic composition. [Pg.1989]

Because cast iron has a carbon content approximately equivalent to its eutectic composition, it can be cast at lower temperatures than steel and flows more readily than steel because of its much narrower temperature solidification range. The presence of the graphite flakes in cast iron decreases its shrinkage on solidification much less than that of steel. These factors contribute to the fabrication of cast iron as sound castings in complex shapes and with accurate dimensions at low cost. [Pg.54]

The galvanic cell studied (shown in Fig. 5.24) utilizes a highly porous solid electrolyte that is a eutectic composition of LiCl and KCl. This eutectic has a melt temperature of 352 °C and has been carefully studied in prior electrochemical studies. Such solid electrolytes are typical of thermal battery technology in which galvanic cells are inert until the electrolyte is melted. In the present case, shock compression activates the electrolyte by enhanced solid state reactivity and melting. The temperature resulting from the shock compression is controlled by experiments at various electrolyte densities, which were varied from 65% to 12.5% of solid density. The lower densities were achieved by use of microballoons which add little mass to the system but greatly decrease the density. [Pg.134]

Of the elements normally present in tin-rich alloys, lead forms a simple eutectic system with a eutectic composition at 63% Sn, and copper and antimony have a small solid solubility and form the intermetallic compounds Cu Sn, and SbSn respectively. ... [Pg.801]

A hyper-eutectic alloy containing, say, 50% Sb starts to freeze when the temperature reaches the liquidus line (point a in Fig. 20.39). At this temperature pure pro-eutectic Sb nucleates as the temperature continues to fall, more antimony is deposited from the melt, and the composition of the liquid phase moves down the liquidus line to the eutectic point. When this is reached, the remainder of the melt solidifies. The microstructure of alloys of eutectic composition varies somewhat with alloy system, but generally consists of an aggregate of small particles, often platelets, of one of the phases comprising the eutectic in a continuous matrix of the other phase. Finally, the microstructure of the hypereutectic 50% Sb alloy already mentioned... [Pg.1275]

Eutectic composition It has a minimum melting temperature when two or more liquid solubility curves interact. [Pg.636]

Complete recovery of dissolved solids is obtainable by evaporation, but only to the eutectic composition by chilling. [Pg.4]

Recovery by melt crystallization also is limited by the eutectic composition. [Pg.4]

In the case of a simple eutectic system shown in Fig. 20-2, a pure solid phase is obtainecf by cooling if the composition of the feed mixture is not at the eutectic composition. If liquid composition is eutectic, then separate crystals of both species will form. In practice it is difficult to attain perfect separation of one component by crystallization of a eutectic mixture. The solid phase will always contain trace amounts of impurity because of incomplete solid-liquid separation, slight solubility of the impurity in the solid phase, or volumetric inclusions. It is difficult to generalize on which of these mechanisms is the major cause of contamination because of analytical difficulties in the ultrahigh-purity range. [Pg.4]
