Metastable phase equilibria

It is instructive to consider the free-energy hierarchy and the metastable phase equilibria when crystallization of an amorphous material is discussed. Koster and Herold [56] discussed these aspects of crystallization and showed that crystallization reactions of amorphous alloys can be classified into the following three types polymorphic, primary and eutectic crystallization reactions. Among these three types, the slowest crystal growth process is expected for primary crystallization and thus, primary crystallization is ideal for tailoring fine microstructures upon decomposition of amorphous alloys. [Pg.390]

Wanl] compiled a fliermodynamic database of the Cu-Fe-X (X Al, Co, Cr, Mn, Mo, Ni, Nb, V) systems by the CALPHAD method. According to [2004Wanl], on the basis of this database much information concerning stable and metastable phase equilibria, isothermal and vertical sections, molar fractions of constituent phases, liquidus surface projection, etc., could be predicted. [Pg.475]

Regarding the metastable phase equilibria, two ternary reactions have been measured [1967Mal, 1974Mal] an E-type and a U-type. The compositions of the phases and the reaction temperatures have been indicated in Table 4 as taken from [1974Mal]. [Pg.335]

In this example of the metastable phase equilibria system (NaCl - KCl - Na2B407 - K2B4O7 -H2O) at 308.15 K, the isothermal evaporation box was used. In an air-conditioned laboratory, a thermal insulation material box (70 cm long, 65 cm wide, 60 cm high) with an apparatus to... [Pg.403]

The isothermal evaporation method was used in metastable phase equilibria study. According to phase equilibrium composition, the appropriate quantity of salts and DDW calculated were mixed together as a series of artificial synthesized brines and loaded into clean polyethylene containers (15 cm in diameter, 6 cm high), then the containers were put into the box for the isothermal evaporation at (308.15 0.2) K. The experimental conditions with air flowing velocity of 3.5-4.0 m/s, relative humidity of 20-30%, and evaporation rate of 4-6 mm/d are presented, just like the climate of the Qaidam Basin. For... [Pg.405]
