Analysis and Specifications. Typical product analyses include sohds level, ash, color, conductivity, purity, and minor saccharide levels (19). Specifications for anhydrous and monohydrate crystalline dextrose are available (15). High quahty anhydrous dextrose produced for the pharmaceutical industry is prepared in accordance with additional specifications (20). 

This section aims to present a brief overview of the most significant literature covering general aspects of common techniques used currently for natural food colorant analysis, and specifically current protocols applied to analyze minor natural food colorants whose chemical and technological properties are presented in Sections 2.3 and 7.2. We consider here only pure colorants or extracts that seek or have received approval for use as food additives in the United States and European Union. Legislative aspects are detailed in Sections 7.1 and 7.2.

A dramatic change in instrumental development for environmental chemical analysis and specifically for molecular pollutants has occurred over the last 25 years [48,503-518]. The following sections will review the different techniques and instrumental development currently used for the characterization of organic pollutants. 

The crystal structure of the pigments is determined by X-ray analysis which is sensitive enough to determine 0.3-0.5% anatase in the presence of 99.7-99.5% rutile. For standards, see Table 1 (Titanium dioxide pigments Methods of analysis and Specification ). 

Mixed metal oxide pigments containing iron oxide are also used (see Section 3.1.3). Magnetic iron oxide pigments are discussed in Sections 5.1.1 and 5.1.2. Transparent iron oxide pigments are described in Section 5.4.1. Methods of analysis and specifications of iron oxide pigments are listed in the standards given in Table 1.

It is usually impossible to determine all the essential facts for a given fluid flow by pure theory, and hence much dependence must be placed on experimental investigations. The number of tests to be made can be greatly reduced by a systematic program based on dimensional analysis and specifically on the laws of similitude or similarity, which means certain relations by which test data can be applied to other cases. 

Many standard specifications have been laid down for the more important uses of ZnO (rubber, paints, and the pharmaceutical industry). For standards, see Table 1.1 ( Zinc oxide pigments Methods of analysis and Specification ). Various methods of classification are used, often based on the production process and the chemical composition. The most well known are pharmacopeias (USP, BP DAB, Ph. Eur.) ISO 9298, T31 006 NF, ASTM D79 - 86 and ASTM D 4295 - 89. Table 2.13 shows a classification with typical data for commercially available zinc oxide grades (more detailed standard specifications see standards mentioned above).
