An Overview of the Book

The rest of the book can be divided into roughly three groups of chapters. A brief overview of these is given below. 

Chapters 2-6 and Chapter 9 focus on many of the basic phenomena and techniques relevant to colloid and surface chemistry. These provide additional theoretical concepts and experimental tools routinely employed in the area. These include 

The competition between diffusion and sedimentation and how this is used to measure particle size, solvation of particles, etc. (Chapter 2) 

Flow and rheology of dispersions and viscosity of polymer solutions and how viscosity is used to characterize dispersions (Chapter 4) 

Turbidity measurements, static and dynamic light scattering, and a brief introduction to x-ray and neutron scattering (Chapter 5)

This chapter has provided an overview of the book and has described its underlying philosophy, the system-induced error approach (abbreviated to the systems approach in subsequent chapters). The essence of the systems approach is to move away from the traditional blame and punishment approach to human error, to one which seeks to understand and remedy its underlying causes. 

This book deals with four major areas of selectivity stereoselectivity clusters, alloys, and poisoning shape selectivity and reaction pathway control. An overview of the book and reviews of each of the four major areas are included as introductory chapters. Each review is followed by individual contributions by attendees of the symposium. 

This section provides an overview of the book s subject matter, as well as a more specific explanation of coverage. Little or no technical jargon should be used. This is where you make the case for how useful your book will be to... 

I wish to be brief on most of the technical points raised by the present collection of papers. The results of most of these have been excellently summarised in later, commonly available work which is relatively well known. In this technical introduction, 1 provide an overview of the book and some additional brief comments on individual papers. 

This introductory chapter (Chapter 1) presents an overview of the book, and summarizes the contents and subject matter of each chapter so as to offer certain glimpses of the coverage of discussion to the readers before they go for detailed study. 

Part I presents an overview of the book where scope, problem definition and solution significance are explained. It presents the background and similar research work done in this area. Also it describes the approach followed along with the theoretical and methodological framework developed to achieve the stated research objective. In this section, the plant safety model is presented as the base of designing CAPE-SAFE within PEEE. 

This chapter adds the socio-economic dimension to the medical or technical perspectives of the proceeding contributions of this book. As its health economic terminology and approach might be unfamiliar to some readers, we start with a section on methodology. In particular, we present an overview of the concept of Cost-of-Illness (COI) and of relevant health economic evaluation techniques. In Sect. 2, we present the basic findings of a meta-analysis of the socio-economic costs of HIV/AIDS and of the socio-economic impact of antiviral intervention. The major findings are reflected in Sect. 3. The chapter closes with a speculation on long-term socio-economic costs of antiviral intervention. 

An overview of the work published after 1978 is collected in Table 7.3. Earlier reports are covered in the first edition of this book (Part V of CD-ROM). 

Ta Mossbauer effect measurements have, up to now, not been carried out with a great variety of materials. An overview of the reports, that have appeared since the first edition of this book came out, is given in Table 7.6.

The first section gives an overview of the polymers and materials currently being used in drug delivery and some of the problems with and opportunities for polymeric drug delivery. Proteomics is an interdisciplinary science that includes biology, bioinformatics, and protein chemistry. The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with an overview of the types of questions being addressed in proteomics studies and the technologies used to address those questions. The first chapter is a concise outline of the field as it presently stands. The second chapter provides an overview of the use of 2D-gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry to identify proteins, as well as post-translational... 

However, there is now a huge variety of NMR experiments available which can be used in problem-solving, in addition to the standard experiments which are a must . We start by providing an overview of the most useful techniques available, as far as possible using one single molecule to demonstrate which information they bring. The problems follow in the second part of the book. 

Although many books and reviews have been written about block copolymers, the ongoing research motivated us to give an overview of the results during the last years in various aspects of the field. 

Hence, catalysis may be considered as an enabling technology for this transition and, for this reason, it is necessary to better understand the limitations and possibilities in this field. We need to define future necessary directions of R D and the needs of fundamental and applied knowledge. In other words, there is the need to develop a roadmap for catalytic processes based on renewable feedstock. This book aims to provide an overview of the current state-of-the-art on which such a research agenda can be based. 

The snccess of a book strongly depends on the author, on his approach and his expertise. I was particular happy that Callum Hill took on this project in view of his extensive knowledge in the field. He has succeeded in presenting an overview of the modification of wood in sufficient detail and with great attention to the literature. Thanks Callum. 

The book is divided into five sections. The first chapter is outside this structure and is an overview of the technology of expert systems. 

The third and last part of the book (Chapters 12-16) deals with zeolite catalysis. Chapter 12 gives an overview of the various reactions which have been catalyzed by zeolites, serving to set the reader up for in-depth discussions on individual topics in Chapters 13-16. The main focus is on reactions of hydrocarbons catalyzed by zeolites, with some sections on oxidation catalysis. The literature review is drawn from both the patent and open literature and is presented primarily in table format. Brief notes about commonly used zeolites are provided prior to each table for each reaction type. Zeolite catalysis mechanisms are postulated in Chapter 13. The discussion includes the governing principles of performance parameters like adsorption, diffusion, acidity and how these parameters fundamentally influence zeolite catalysis. Brief descriptions of the elementary steps of hydrocarbon conversion over zeolites are also given. The intent is not to have an extensive review of the field of zeolite catalysis, but to select a sufficiently large subset of published literature through which key points can be made about reaction mechanisms and zeolitic requirements.
