Leaks ammonia

Leaks can be detected at once by ammonia odor unless there is already an appreciable amount of ammonia in the ak. Leaks can be exactiy located by using either moist phenolphthalein paper or an open bottie of hydrochloric acid. If a serious ammonia leak is discovered, a large column of water apphed through a fire hose having a spray nozzle can be used to absorb the vaporized ammonia. 

Gluteraldehyde, a widely used biocide, is not effective in process cooling systems when ammonia leaks reach 50 ppm. Also, do not use gluteraldehyde in water circuits with severe protein contamination (such as can occur in chicken processing plants), as it functions as a protein cross-linking agent and can be overwhelmed. 

The major reason for considering the use of a safe haven or temporary haven is that immediate evacuation of the people affected may not be feasible. Gardner and Jann (1990) have shown that for chlorine and ammonia leak scenarios where the release duration is ten minutes, indoor sheltering can reduce the risk by 98.5% when compared to outdoor exposure. In this scenario, it was assumed that the building used as the temporary haven had an air change rate of once per hour. 

On January 18, 2002, a Canadian Pacific freight train derailed outside Minot, North Dakota. Five of the cars carried anhydrous ammonia. Leaking ammonia killed one person and sent dozens of others to hospitals for treatment. Ten of those seeking treatment were admitted to the hospital. Some local residents were evacuated, while others were asked to shelter in place. Civil defense sirens and local radio and television stations alerted residents. 

Finding DII TC 1. Demo II tests were delayed and could not be completed for the Teledyne-Commodore process because of incidents in which the immaturity of the process became apparent. For example, an exothermic reaction between ammonia vapor and M28 propellant led to an ignition incident. At another time. Composition B, dissolved in liquid ammonia, leaked through flanges into valves and piping that were intended to transfer the material from the ammonia fluid jet-cutting vessel to the SET m reactor. These incidents revealed serious safety problems associated with the Teledyne-Commodore process. 

Similarly a burning piece of sulphur will also start fuming in case of an ammonia leak.

In the event of a gaseous ammonia leak, shut down aU ignition sources and ventilate the area at once to prevent flammable mixtures from forming. Carefully remove cylinders with slow leaks to a fume hood or remote outdoor location. Limit access to an affected area. Respiratory protection may be necessary in the event of a large... 

In the hot summer sun, the drums soon became heated, increasing the odor in the surrounding area. The warehouse manager called the fire brigade, which duly arrived and donned the gas-tight suits that they used to deal with ammonia leaks. They reidentified the trade name on the drum and confirmed the leaks but were not really geared up to do much more. 

The continuous presence of the sharp, irritating odor of ammonia is evidence of a leak. Leaks of ammonia can be located by allowing fumes from an open bottle of hydrochloric acid (from a squeeze bottle of sulfuric acid or from a sulfur dioxide aerosol container) to come in contact with leaking ammonia vapor. This produces a dense fog. Leaks may also be detected with moist phenolphthalein or litmus paper. Sulfur tapes for detecting ammonia leaks are not recommended. When there is a leak around an ammonia container valve stem, it usually can be corrected by tightening the packing gland nut, which has a counter-clockwise thread.

Ammonia leaks have only a limited effect on the resistance of aluminium above a concentration of 30%, uniform corrosion on the order of 100 p.m per year is observed between 30 and 70% pickling occurs, and at even higher concentrations, superficial micropitting appears (Figure D.3.6). 

There are three major ammonia pipelines two in the U.S. and one in the USSR. One of the American pipelines (MidAmerica Pipeline System) transports ammonia from the Texas Panhandle to points in Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa. Its total peak capacity delivered to a number of points is 8000 t/day [22]. The other U.S. pipeline, the Gulf Central Pipeline, transports anhydrous ammonia from major producers along the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast to points in Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, Indiana and Missouri [23]. Further information on the maintenance and repair of the MidAmerica Pipeline System is given in [24]. The total weight of ammonia in the MidAmerica Pipeline System, when full, is approximately 20,000 tons. Lock valves are 10 miles apart so it would be possible that 400 tons could get out between lock valves [22]. It is known from [12] that in one accident 700 tons of liquid ammonia leaked from the pipeline in the USSR. In the USSR pipeline accident, the aerosol cloud of ammonia covered a forested territory about 40 km in area however, all residents in the region were evacuated in time. Pipeline operations in the U.S. are governed by the national Gas Pipeline Safety Act of 1968, as amended in 1979 [17].
