Amino acids therapeutic usee

Gelatin can be a source of essential amino acids when used as a diet supplement and therapeutic agent. As such, it has been widely used in muscular disorders, peptic ulcers, and infant feeding, and to spur nail growth. Gelatin is not a complete protein for mammalian nutrition, however, since it is lacking in the essential amino acid tryptophan [73-22-3] and is deficient in sulfur-containing amino acids. 

Chymotrypsin [ban, inn] (EC 3.4.21.1 Catarase Zonulysin ) is an enzyme (MW c. 25,0(X) a-form). It is a (serine) endopeptidase stored as zymogen in granules of pancreatic P-cells of mammals. Acamprosate. Acamprosate (calcium acetylhomotaurinate), an amino acid derivative, affects both GABA and excitatory amino acid (i.e., glutamate) neurotransmission (the latter effect most likely being the one that is important for its therapeutic effects in alcoholism). Initially evaluated in a singlecenter trial in France, acamprosate was shown to be twice as effective as placebo in reducing the rate at which alcoholic patients returned to drinking (Lhuin-tre et al. 1985). The safety and efficacy of the medication have been studied most widely in Europe, and three of these studies provided the basis for the recent approval of acamprosate by the FDA for clinical use in the United States. As with naltrexone, there exist a number of meta-analytic studies that provide consistent evidence of the efficacy of the medication in the treatment of alcohol dependence. 

The other direction concerns the use of immobilized transition metal catalysts in the synthesis of libraries of organic compounds of interest in therapeutic drug discovery. One such strategy uses immobilized catalysts (e.g., scandium complexes), leading to efficient library syntheses of quinolines, amino ketones, and amino acid esters.72,73... 

The significance of protein oxidation became paramount with the advent of recombinant protein biologies used as human therapeutics. Careful characterization of protein stability is essential to maintaining the efficacy of protein pharmaceuticals. If even a single side chain amino acid residue becomes oxidized, then a protein therapeutic may not have the same activity in vivo as the unmodified protein. 

An alternative therapeutic approach to osteoporosis is through the use of calcitonin (798), a peptide hormone containing 32 amino acids (the sequence is species dependent) secreted by the thyroid gland, which stimulates the production of new bone. Synthetic calcitonins corresponding to human, eel, and salmon variants, and natural calcitonin extracted from pig thyroid, are all used in medicine - they have slightly different efficacies, side effects, and tolerance levels (799).
