American Zinc Association

The American Zinc Association is a trade organization comprising primary and secondary producers of zinc metal, zinc oxide and zinc dust marketed in the United States.

According to the American Zinc Association, sheet and strip galvanizing accounted for 540,000 metric tons of zinc (Metallized coatings supplier, Personal communication, 2000.).

Dentistry. Most casting alloys meet the composition and properties criteria of specification no. 5 of the American Dental Association (37) which prescribes four types of alloy systems constituted of gold—silver—copper with addition of platinum, palladium, and zinc. Composition ranges are specified, as are mechanical properties and minimum fusion temperatures. Wrought alloys for plates also may include the same constituents. Similarly, specification no. 7 prescribes nickel and two types of alloys for dental wires with the same alloy constituents (see Dental materials).

The profitability of galvanizing is dependent on zinc commodity price and the size of the market. The two growth markets have been identified by the American Galvanizers Association. The first opportunity is the transition of utility poles from wood to galvanized steel. The elimination of wooden poles in favor of galvanized steel is estimated to add 200-300 million for the galvanizing industry.

Zinc also can be identified in aqueous solutions by colorimetric methods. Two such methods, known as dithizone and zincon methods are applicable to analyze zinc in water (APHA, AWWA, and WEF. 1999. Due mainly to the environmental problems associated with - mercury, the sale of mercury batteries has been banned in many countries during the past years, and they were banned by the International Electrochemical Commission (IEC) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). They have been replaced by alkaline-manganese dioxide, zinc/air, silver oxide, and lithium batteries. 

The analysis of nitric-perchloric acid digests of feed samples for a local industry presented an early test of the ICAP analysis of organic samples. The results obtained for Association of American Feed Control OflBcials (AAFCO) feed check samples (included as quality assurance standards within the sample suite) are given in Tables V and VI. The ICAP results for iron, copper, zinc, manganese, cobalt, and potassium are all within the uncertainty limits of the certified values. While not within the uncertainty limits, the results for calcium, magnesium, sodium, and phosphorus compare with acceptable agreement for the intended application.
