FLOAT house

With the pohcy factor p = 10 the limit line hes above the FN-curve. This means that flooding in Vietnam is acceptable if flood accident is viewed as similar as a voluntary activity with direct benefit. This might be true only for some specific rural areas in the low-lying Mekong river delta where floating house are popular and annual flood brings fertilizing rice fields. [Pg.1087]

Similar structures were designed in New Orleans, Louisiana, following Hurricane Katrina. In 2010, the Special No. 9 House, designed by John G. Wilhams Architects for the Brad Pitt Make It Right Foundation, won the American Institute of Architects Committee on the Environment (AIA/COTE) Top Ten Green Projects Award. The FLOAT house, also in New Orleans, is another Make It Right Foundation project developed by Morphosis Architects under the direction of architect and University of California, Los Angeles, professor Thom Mayne. [Pg.111]

An effective way of preventing vent loss is to use one of the many types of variable-volume tanks. These are built under API Standard 650. They may have floating roofs of the double-deck or the singledeck type. There are hfter-roof types in which the roof either has a sldrt moving up and down in an annular hquid seal or is connected to the tank shell oy a flexible membrane. A fabric expansion chamber housed in a compartment on top of the tank roof also permits variation in volume. [Pg.1016]

When the tank was refilled with warm crude oil at 37°C. vapor was pushed out into the space above the floating roof and then out into the atmosphere through vents on the fixed-roof tank (Figure 5-16). This vapor was ignited at a boiler house some distance away. [Pg.127]

The use of properly designed relief panels or free floating vessel covers are usually effective for dust explosions in silos tanks, filter housings, and the like. The design basis has been pre dousIy discussed. [Pg.519]

The French drain (also called a channel drain or floating slab) is a construction feature that appears to provoke strong reaction from its defenders and detractors alike. French drains are only a concern in basement foundations. This slab detail is a standard feature in new houses in parts of the country as varied as New York and Colorado, but in other places it is virtually unknown. French drains are used in areas with expansive soils, such as parts of Colorado, to protect the slab from damage if the wall moves. In central New York State, the main function of the French drain is to drain away water that may seep down the walls. One national builder has discontinued and now prohibits the use of French drains in houses because of the potential for radon problems. This builder states that French drains also have been found to significantly increase indoor moisture levels. [Pg.1278]

List all the activities involved in either making a float for thehomecoming parade or decorating a house for homecoming. Assume both displays will be judged at night, so lighting is essential. Put a time on each activity and obtain the critical path. Which items can be and should be crashed to finish ahead of time ... [Pg.386]

The containers for water softener and clarifiers are situated in the door of the dishwasher. The reed sensor is mounted next to the plastic casing that contains a magnet in a protective foam housing, floating on the liquid. When the level drops to a certain point, the floater activates the reed sensor, which in turn directly operates an indicator light on the front panel. The operator of the dishwasher is then alerted that softeners and/or clarifiers need to be refilled. [Pg.134]

Applications over die past several years have included guidance sysLem parts, such as gimbals, gyroscopes, stable platforms, housings, mirrors, aircraft brakes, and accelerometers. In advanced (U.S.) land-based nuclear missiles, there is a precisely machined beryllium sphere, floating, warmed and protected, in a fluid bath. [Pg.196]

And then sank through the pillows down into fever, his body aflame with all his life s summers. Burning in the bedroom of cartons still unpacked, a pyre, a fug, till his mind warped with heat floated through the house and into the speakers just rigged up in Jo s bedroom. The perfect surfer gliding to shore. [Pg.21]
