American Bakers Association. Before the turn of the century, the baking industry felt the need for an educational and scientific organization and thus the American Bakers Association was founded in 1897. It seems incredible today that mechanical equipment for bakery operation was almost unknown only 50 years ago. But the American Bakers Association s first meeting, with those to follow during the next few years, gave impetus to rapid development and improvement of ovens and new equipment which were to have a great effect on the progress of the whole industry. [Pg.249]

Iron—In 1970, the American Bakers Association and the Millers National Federation asked the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to triple the amount of iron permitted in the enrichment of flour and bread because there was widespread concern over iron-deficiency anemia in women and children. However, it was strongly opposed by some of the leading blood specialists on the grounds that it might lead to toxic accumulations of iron in the tissues of susceptible people. [Pg.731]

B. R. Baker received recognition for his scientific achievements in the form of several awards. The Research Achievement Award in Medicinal Chemistry from the American Pharmaceutical Association was presented to him in 1963, followed in 1964 by the Ebert Prize for the best paper of that year in the Journal of the Pharmaceutical Sciences. In 1966, he was the first recipient of the Award in Medicinal Chemistry of the American Chemical Society his acceptance address, given at the Tenth Annual Medicinal Chemistry Symposium at Bloomington, Indiana, was entitled The Evolution of Neighboring Group Reactions and Enzymes A Mating to a New Generation of Medicinal Chemistry. The Alfred Benzon prize of the Alfred Benzon Foundation of Denmark was presented to him in... [Pg.9]

Previously, in this chapter, I have described how cumulative job tenure can help develop realistic safety expectations. Clearly, the school leaver applicant has not had the opportunity to adjust their safe expectations based on previous work experience. However, educators and parents can play an important role in safety-specific expectation setting. Parents and educators can deliver key messages about workplace safety either informally as part of parenting or formally as part of the school curriculum activities. While parents may not have a legal responsibility to ensure their child s safety at work, as parents they do have a moral responsibility. School system education in occupational health and safety has been called for by a number of authors (e.g., American Public Health Association 1995 Bush and Baker... [Pg.32]

The prediction of fixigment effects is important, as many deaths and domino damage effects are attributable to fragments. The method of Baker et al. (1983) can be used, but specific worit on BLEVE firagmentation hazards has been done by the Association of American Railroads (AAR) (1972,1973) and by Holden and Reeves (1985). The AAR reports that of 113 major failures of horizontal cylindrical tanks in fire situations, about 80% resulted in projected fragments. [Pg.187]
