Ambition

He went at a thing like a bull at a gate. —W. H. Patterson (English chemist), describing Fritz Eiaber [Pg.35]

Fritz haber s debut performance on the scientific stage captured Wilhelm Ostwald s full attention and fixed itself in his memory. Years later, while writing his memoirs, Ostwald remembered the scene clearly the fifth annual congress of the German Electrochemical Society in 1898, hosted by Ostwald himself in his gleaming new Institute of Physical Chemistry in Leipzig—the institute that Haber had once tried and failed to join. [Pg.35]

The days of this congress were filled with scientific presentations, and it was midmorning of the second day before the young man from Karlsruhe strode to the podium. Fritz Haber was twenty-nine years old, merely a Privatdozent, a position roughly [Pg.35]

Rather than being intimidated, Haber seemed energized by the spotlight. He galloped through his presentation at a breathtaking pace, and many in the audience struggled to keep up. [Pg.37]

The details of Haber s presentation aren t so important. (They concerned the circumstances under which electricity, when passed through a liquid solution, breaks chemical bonds of compounds in that solution.) What Ostwald remembered, and what struck everyone else in the room as well, was the young man s energy and apparent self-confidence. [Pg.37]

Theoretical work or compressor head is the heart and substance of compressor design. Some basic form of understanding must be devel oped even if involvement with compressors is less than that of design of the machine itself. Proper applications cannot be made if this understanding is absent. The following theoretical evaluations will be abbreviated as much as possible to reduce the length and still present the philosophy. For the reader with the ambition and desire, the presentation will be an outline to which the reader can fill in the spaces. [Pg.30]

This episode has been displayed in some detail because colloid science is a clear instance of a major field of research which has never quite succeeded in gaining recognition as a distinct discipline, in spite of determined attempts by a number of its practitioners. The one feature that most distinguishes colloid science from physical chemistry, polymer science and chemical engineering is that universities have not awarded degrees in colloid science. That is, perhaps, what counts most for fields with ambitions to become fullblown disciplines. [Pg.44]

Purely physical laws mainly control the behaviour of very large particles. Further down the particle size range, however, specific surface area, i.e. surface area per unit mass, increases rapidly. Chemical effects then become important, as in the nucleation and growth of crystals. Thus, a study of particulate systems within this size range of interest has become very much within the ambit of chemical engineering, physical chemistry and materials science. [Pg.7]

Goal setting. A mentor can often assist mentees to clarify their goals. There is little point in having drive and ambition if you have no idea what to focus these qualities on or how to achieve a certain goal. [Pg.32]

It is obvious that strenuous efforts have been invested in the research of 5-HT receptors and, in particular, in the development of receptor-selective agonists and antagonists. All this has been done in the hope that it might be possible to control a specific switch in the brain that governs a particular aspect of 5-HT function and which would be beneficial therapeutically. A further ambition is that, by avoiding activation of other 5-HT receptors, the risk of any unwanted side-effects would be eliminated. Of course, it is equally possible that reduction in non-specific receptor interactions could actually unmask some side-effects. [Pg.203]

Analysis of RMs enables assessment of laboratory factors (equipment, staff etc.) on quality, but it is the awareness of the importance of reference materials within the quality culture of the laboratory (recognizing crucial steps in method vahdation, ambitions to have good IQC and ambitions to have better performance scores in EQA) - that they are used to greatest effect. [Pg.121]

The present chapter has no ambition to cover all these topics. We focus solely on the information content of the two-pathway coherent control approach, where the energy-domain, single quantum states approach to the control problem simplifies the phase information and allows analysis at the most fundamental level. We regret having to limit the scope of this chapter and thus exclude much of the relevant literature. We hope, however, that this contribution will entice the reader to explore related literature of relevance. [Pg.149]

Recognizing Perkin s ability and ambition, Hofmann made Perkin his research and staff assistant. The youth had his own ideas about how to make quinine, but his work for Hofmann left him little time at school to pursue them. So, over Easter vacation in 1856, Perkin decided to work on the problem at home. [Pg.18]

There are some chemometric (chemometrics is a statistical area which combines statistics and chemistry) tools which use the chemical descriptors and/or fragments of the chemicals used to build up the model, and compare if the chemical descriptors and/or fragments of the target chemical are similar. An example of this approach is given by the freely available software AMBIT. A major disadvantage of this approach is that it is based only on the chemical information. [Pg.85]

Science popularizer Matt Ridley sums it all up - Genes are recipes for both anatomy and behavior and the body is but the victim, plaything, battleground and vehicle for the ambitions of the genes (Ridley, 1999). [Pg.305]
