Partly for these reasons, methanol has been the required fuel of the IndianapoHs 500 since 1965. Methanol is also used in many other professional and amateur races. However, transparency of the methanol flames has also been a disadvantage in some race track fires. The invisibiUty of the flame has confused pit crews, delayed fire detection, and caused even trained firefighters problems in locating and extinguishing fires. [Pg.421]

Joule had no real protession except as an amateur scientist, and no job except for some involvement in running the family breweiy. Since his father was ill and forced to retire in 1833, his son had to become more involved in the affairs of the brewery from 1833 to 1854, when the brewery was sold by his family. While Joule was working at the breweiy, he carried out his experiments before 9 00 A.M., when the factory opened, and after 6 00 P.M., when it closed. Because his father built a laboratoiy for him in his home, in 1854 he had the time and means to devote himself completely to physics research. Later in life, he suffered severe financial misfortune, but the Royal Society and Queen Victoria in 1878 each provided a 200 subsidy for Joule to continue his important researches. [Pg.682]

The three men whose work later in the nineteenth century was crucial in bringing clarity to this principle were two Germans, the physician Julius Robert Mayer and the great polymath Hermann von Helmholtz, and the British amateur scientist James Joule. CAM-PC is a general purpose CA software simulation environment based on CAM-6, Designed by members of the GENOME Project at Eotvos University in Hungary, the first version of CAM-PC extends the possibilities of CAM-6 but is not yet fully compatible with it. The primary addition is support for 8 bit planes, increasing the size of CAM-6 s ccdl-statc alphabet to 256, The laudable purpose behind the project is to provide inexpensive but otherwise fully functional simulation tools for amateur researchers unable to afford faster dedicatcxl hardware. [Pg.718]

Those who knew the amply-proportioned Maurice of his later years were surprised to be told of his former sporting prowess. He had represented the university in athletics, cricket, and soccer, and after his playing days, he maintained connections with sport. As a senior member of the university, preoccupied with important duties, he continued to give support to student athletics and swimming, and was an honorary life member of the Amateur Athletic Association. [Pg.4]

Sheet vinyl is best installed by professionals, whereas tiles can be laid by amateurs if instructions are followed carefully. Sheet flooring is usually considered more attractive and easier to maintain. It has few seams to open up in time and become dirt catchers or entrance points for moisture. In some materials, seams can be welded by heat, thus forming a permanent seal. Others will in time require additional sealer. Tiles, on the other hand, can be laid with less waste and also have the advantage of being replaceable if damaged. Whichever type is chosen, a supply of extra tiles or a few scraps of sheet flooring should be kept for possible future repairs. [Pg.65]

Despite these hazards, humans continue to venture beneath the surface of the seas. Adventurers seek to salvage materials from sunken ships. Archaeologists wish to explore ancient seaport sites that have since sunk beneath the waves. Navy Seals practice warfare underwater. Biologists and lovers of nature study marine life in its natural habitat. In addition, hordes of amateur divers pursue this sport for its sheer enjoyment. [Pg.855]

For the amateur glass-worker it is very helpful if the rotating movement of a piece of work held horizontally in the flame can be continued in a horizontal line, with the work lifted slightly out of the flame for blowing, instead of having to lift one end to the mouth. The glass-blower s swivel enables him to do this. [Pg.26]
