Aluminum chloride hexahydrate

In the laboratory, anhydrous Aids can be prepared by heating the metal with dry HCl gas at 150°C. The product sublimes and deposits in the cool air condenser. Unreacted HCl is vented out. [Pg.7]

Reacts with calcium and magnesium hydrides in tetrahydrofuran forming tetrahydro aluminates, Ca(AlH4)2 reacts with hydrides of alkali metals in ether forming aluminum hydride  [Pg.7]

Hydrolyzes in chilled, dilute HCl forming aluminum chloride hexahydrate, A1C13-6H20 reacts violently with water, evolving HCl, [Pg.7]

Violent exothermic reactions can occur when mixed with water or alkene. Corrosive to skin. [Pg.7]

The hexahydrate is used in the preparation of deodorant and antiperspi-rant. Also, it is apphed in textile finishing to improve the antistatic characteristics and flammability ratings of various textile materials. Commercially, it is sold as crystalline powder or as a 28% solution in water. [Pg.7]

Aluminum Halides. AH the halogens form covalent aluminum compounds having the formula AIX. The commercially most important are the anhydrous chloride and fluoride, and aluminum chloride hexahydrate. [Pg.136]

Aluminum chloride hexahydrate, AIQ 6H20, manufactured from aluminum hydroxide and hydrochloric acid [7647-01-0], HQ, is used in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics as a flocculant and for impregnating textiles. Conversion of solutions of hydrated aluminum chloride with aluminum to the aluminum chlorohydroxy complexes serve as the basis of the most widely used antiperspirant ingredients (20). [Pg.136]

The hexahydrate of aluminum chloride is a deUquescent, crystalline soHd soluble in water and alcohol and usually made by dissolving aluminum hydroxide [21645-51 -2] A1(0H)2, ia concentrated hydrochloric acid. When the acid is depleted, the solution is cooled to 0 °C and gaseous hydrogen chloride is introduced. Crystalline aluminum chloride hexahydrate, AIQ 6H20, is precipitated, filtered from the Hquor, washed with ethyl ether, and dried. [Pg.148]

Aluminum chloride hexahydrate is available ia a 28% by weight (32° Be ) aqueous solution shipped ia glass carboys, tank cars, or tmcks. Crystalline hexahydrate is shipped ia glass containers or plastic-lined dmms. In 1980, 5200 metric tons of aluminum chloride hexahydrate on a 100% AlCl basis was produced ia the United States (10). [Pg.149]

A recent patent issued to Leo and Taylor66 describes a method for the preparation of a colorless solution of PM from alfalfa. The ground leaves are pressed out and the juice is clarified with aluminum hydroxide. The latter may be produced in the press juice by the addition of calcium carbonate, and aluminum chloride hexahydrate. The precipitate carries... [Pg.108]

Mefa/s/Fabr/cs. Aluminum chloride (hexahydrate) may be harmful to certain metals and fabrics. [Pg.2059]

Aluminum chloride hexahydrate is prepared by dissolving Al(OH)3 in cone. HCl and passing gaseous HCl through the solution at 0°C. The precipitate is washed with diethyl ether and dried. Alternatively, it is prepared by hydrolyzing anhydrous AICI3 in cold dilute HCl. [Pg.7]

HCl also may be prepared by several other methods including thermal dissociation of aluminum chloride hexahydrate, AICI3 6H2O, and as a by-product of manufacturing many organic compounds. [Pg.359]

Aluminum halides react with water with a considerable evolution of 2 Aluminum chloride dimer, A12C16 heat. When the anhydrous chloride is exposed to moist air, it produces fumes of hydrochloric acid (Fig. 14.32). Aluminum chloride hexahydrate,... [Pg.826]

A catalytic amount of aluminum chloride hexahydrate enables solvent-free tetrahydropyr-anylation of alcohols and phenols at moderate temperatures and a simple addition of methanol helps to regenerate the corresponding alcohols and phenols [43]. [Pg.89]

Aluminum chloride hexahydrate (1 mmol), DHP (110 mmol) and benzyl alcohol (100 mmol) were mixed in a 50-mL round-bottomed flask and stirred at 30 °C the progress of the reaction was monitored by TLC and GC-MS. The complete protection was ascertained by the disappearance of the alcohol signal in the GC. For solid substrates, moderate heating was required. The product was purified by filtering the reaction mixture through a short column of silica gel (2 cm length, 0.5 cm diameter) with petroleum ether ( 4 mL) to obtain pure THP ether (99%). [Pg.378]
