Magnesium sulfate.heptahydrate

Mineral hydrates, such as alumina trihydrate and magnesium sulfate heptahydrate, are used in highly filled thermoset resins. [Pg.1009]

Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate may be prepared by neutralization of sulfuric acid with magnesium carbonate or oxide, or it can be obtained directly from natural sources. It occurs abundantly as a double salt and can also be obtained from the magnesium salts that occur in brines used for the extraction of bromine (qv). The brine is treated with calcium hydroxide to precipitate magnesium hydroxide. Sulfur dioxide and air are passed through the suspension to yield magnesium sulfate (see Chemicals frombrine). Magnesium sulfate is a saline cathartic. [Pg.202]

As described in U.S. Patent 2,929,763, methandrostenolone may be made by a fermentation route. 2 g of sodium nitrate, 1 g of primary potassium orthophosphate, 0.5 g of magnesium sulfate heptahydrate, 0.5 g of potassium chloride, 50 g of glucose and 1 g of Difco yeast extract are dissolved in one liter of tap water, brought to pH 5 by addition of a sodium hydroxide solution and sterilized. The resulting nutrient solution is inoculated with 50 cc of a 4-day-old shaking culture of Didyniel/a lycopersici and shaken for 48 hours at 27 C, whereby the culture becomes well developed. [Pg.967]

Malt extract (1 g), yeast extract (1 g) and magnesium sulfate heptahydrate (0.012 g) were dissolved with water and the volume was adjusted to 100 mL with tap water. The culture medium (30 mL) was placed in a 500 mL shaking-flask with a cotton plug and sterilized (121 °C, 20 min). The seed culture broth was transferred to a 500 mL shaking-flask containing 30 mL of the culture medium. Cultivation was carried out for 48 h at 28 °C and 115 strokes per minute. [Pg.367]

Epsom salts, for example, consist of crystals of magnesium sulfate heptahydrate, MgS04-7H20. Every formula unit of magnesium sulfate has seven molecules of water weakly bonded to it. A raised dot in a chemical formula, in front of one or more water molecules, denotes a hydrated compound. Note that the dot does not include multiplication, but rather a weak bond between an ionic compound and one or more water molecules. Some other examples of hydrates are shown in Table 6.4. [Pg.223]

The molar mass of a hydrated compound must include the mass of any water molecules that are in the compound. For example, the molar mass of magnesium sulfate heptahydrate includes the mass of 7 mol of water. [Pg.223]
