Ginkgo alters lipid metabolism created by electroconvulsive shock treatments. EGb 761 reduced accumulation of free fatty acids and removal of diacylglycerol, which is more pronounced in the hippocampus than cerebral cortex (Rodriguez de Turco et al. 1993). Analbuminemia. Only 20 or so famflies with inherited analbuminemia have been reported, attesting to the protein s physiological importance. Although affected individuals have plasma albumin levels less than 0.5 g/L (about 1% of normal), they were originally reported to be clinically normal except for mild edema (usually none before the second to fourth decades of Life) and altered lipid metabolism. In 1996, the presence of lipodystrophy in women and osteoporosis, hypotension, arcus lipoides corneae, and xanthomatosis in some patients was first reported. In one patient, ankle edema disappeared rapidly with intravenous albumin infusion however, she developed signs of hypocalcemia during infusions. The infusions did not affect her lipodystrophy. In spite of the lipid abnormalities in affected individuals, there is no increased risk for atherosclerosis. The plasma half-life of infused albumin in affected individuals is 50 to 60 days or approximately three times normal.

Compared to age-matched controls, an increase in total cholesterol, HDL-Ch, and LDL-Ch was observed in women 40-49 years of age and 50-59 years of age (Stanosz et al. 1994b). The women were exposed to carbon disulfide at 5-7 ppm for 0.5 to greater than 20 years. Only HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol were increased when the values were examined by duration of carbon disulfide exposure. Rather than being a hepatic effect, the investigators suggest that the effect may be on hormone production by the ovaries resulting in altered lipid metabolism.

Plasma copper levels are higher in diabetic than in nondiabetic individuals. Although no conclusion can be made from over a decade of lipidomics studies, an increasingly accurate picture of altered lipid metabolism in AD could be provided. Below a few aspects of findings in AD obtained from lipidomics are summarized.
