This article extends our earlier work (Yu et al. 2011a, b), in which we tried to determine the factors that affect the prevalence of asthma, allergy, and respiratory symptoms among adults, and whether rural/urban living has an effect on asthma prevalence. Investigating the differences that environmental risk factors pose to adults on prevalence of asthma and asthma-related symptoms in urban and rural locations may provide clues to the mechanisms by which asthma and asthma morbidity occur, and may also uncover needs that are currently unmet.

The acceptable risk of cancer from exposure to ambient air pollutants is usually considered to be 1/1,000,000 persons. The risk of cancer at Superfund sites is usually limited to 1/10,000. However, the risk of cancer from pollutants in air and dust in the home may exceed 1/1,000. The lead risks from soil at Superfund sites is set (500 ppm Pb) so that fewer than 1 in 20 children will have lead poisoning, but the average lead concentration in house dust in older homes may exceed 1000 ppm, and 1 toddler in 11 has lead poisoning. At least 1 person in 5 has allergies and asthma related to exposures to allergens in the home. 

The action of epinephrine and related agents forms the basis of therapeutic control of smooth muscle contraction. Breathing disorders, including asthma and various allergies, can result from excessive contraction of bronchial smooth muscle tissue. The discovery of the utility of the bis-chromone carboxylic acid derivative cromolyn sodium in the treatment of asthma and related allergies has led to an intensive, and thus far not very fruitful, effort to discover analogues which would show oral activity in contrast to the lead which must be administered by inhalation. Thus the total soil pollution was connected with a respiratory system and a digestive tract. Both systems were also sensitive to such urban pollutants as heavy metals and PAH. For radionuclides the correlation with the given nosologies was not revealed. The asthma morbidity was mostly connected with soil pollution rates. This circumstance, apparently, can be related to nonspecific action of pollutants on a human organism, because the etiology of asthma is connected with the human immune defense system and allergy state (Roite, 1991). The last was shown for pesticides (Nikolaev et al., 1988) and heavy metals (Drouet et al., 1990). The sensitized immune system is, apparently, responsible for chronic toxic effects of other pollutants at low doses (Sidorenko et al., 1991 Novak and Magnussen, 1993). 

Asthma, a disease featuring sudden and dramatic variations in respiratory symptoms and pulmonary function, is well known to be related to environmental factors in many cases. Many other factors, however, may play a significant role in the precipitation of asthma attacks, including meteorologic factors, emotional factors, infection, allergy, and physical activity. It has also been demonstrated that there is a significant ethnic variation in factors associated with acute asthma attacks. Nevertheless, between 2 and 5% of the population is subject to asthma attacks, so it has been examined as an indicator of health effects of photochemical-oxidant pollution. 

Special risk Use with caution in patients with possible folate deficiency, severe allergy or bronchial asthma. In G-6-PD deficient individuals, hemolysis may occur it is frequently dose-related.
