The National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) defines asthma as a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways in which many cells and cellular elements play a role. In susceptible individuals, inflammation causes recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing. These episodes are usually associated with airflow obstruction that is often reversible either spontaneously or with treatment. The inflammation also causes an increase in bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) to a variety of stimuli.

Asthma is a mostly reversible, chronic airway inflammatory disease associated with airflow obstruction, bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR), and airway inflammation. Clinical symptoms are cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness caused by mostly reversible airflow obstruction. Inflammation is a key component of asthma. 

Bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) to nonspecific stimuli is a cardinal feature of asthma and has been shown to relate to the severity of disease (30). BHR is generally regarded as a consequence of the chronic airways inflammation of asthma. Airway sensitization, mediated by IgE, appears to be closely related to nonspecific BHR, perhaps through an indirect effect of pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators (31,32).
