All Winners

The chapter, Safety Matrix People Applying Technology to Yield Safe Chemical Plants and Products by Davis of Dow Chemical, is concerned with protecting and improving safety in chemical plants. Dow Chemical has dramatically improved its safety record and seized a leadership position among chemical companies in the past decade. This improvement is not an accident, but the result of a dedicated attitude and systemic application that should be exported to the entire chemical industry. The lessons here would make us all winners and demonstrate that the chemical engineers are the solutions rather than the problems.

Winners do it all. With a strong strategy and execution. Winners build on these strategic practices to strengthen both structure and culture. They make few errors and enjoy the luxury of continually refining and improving already excellent practices. 

This very unfortunate scenario reinforces the absolute need for continuous monitoring programs for residues of all types in animal products, and in particular for hormone materials used for growth promotion. There are several books on the history of the development of taxol, which is one of the most remarkable stories in product development. In fact, it inspired the 1992 motion picture Medicine Man, starring Sean Connery as a research botanist looking for a cancer cure in the Brazilian rain forest. For a time, it became a moral drama pitting the needs of patients of intractable ovarian and breast cancer against the passions of environmentalists to preserve an obscure Pacific yew tree. Suffness and Wall are two of the principals in this story, and they wrote (1995) It [Taxol] is not an obvious winner till the very end, and there were a number of times till the very end when it seemed highly likely that it would not be put into development at all, or that once it had been accepted, it would be dropped. More than 30 years passed between the discovery of taxol, with its potential as an anticancer drug, and its approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for clinical use. 

On the other hand, there is more recent economic literature on racing behavior as applied to research activities. An important conclusion is that in a winner take all situation, there can be overinvestment in research activities. The reason is that the prospective gains may be less than the aggregate amount of the investment undertaken to achieve these gains.
