All Winners

The chapter, Safety Matrix People Applying Technology to Yield Safe Chemical Plants and Products by Davis of Dow Chemical, is concerned with protecting and improving safety in chemical plants. Dow Chemical has dramatically improved its safety record and seized a leadership position among chemical companies in the past decade. This improvement is not an accident, but the result of a dedicated attitude and systemic application that should be exported to the entire chemical industry. The lessons here would make us all winners and demonstrate that the chemical engineers are the solutions rather than the problems. [Pg.336]

All winners up to now where hybrid density functionals. This is not the case for the linear model fit. Figure 9 shows that the best intercept is obtained for a generalized gradient approximation, PBE. PBEsol and even LDA are not much worse, as they produce intercepts of 0.1 eV. The best slope is not obtained for a density functional Hartree-Fock is the method providing the slope closest to unity (see Fig. 10). [Pg.176]

In effect, the ions race each other along the drift tube, but the winners are always the ions of smallest m/z value, since these have the shortest flight times. The last to arrive at the detector are always those of greatest mass, which have the longest flight times. However, as in a race, for there to be a separation at the finish line (the detector), the ions must all start from the ion source at the same time (no handicapping allowed ). [Pg.406]

On the due date when the tenders should have been received, record those that have been submitted and discard any submitted after the deadline. Conduct an evaluation to determine the winner - the subcontractor that can meet all your requirements (including confidence) for the lowest price. The evaluation phase should involve all your staff that were involved with the specification of requirements. You need to develop scoring criteria so that the result is based on objective evidence of compliance. [Pg.319]

Both RO/EDI and RO/MB have overtaken twin-bed DI/MB as preferred technologies, and it is likely that RO/EDI will eventually emerge as the ultimate winner because of its lack of any chemical requirements for regeneration. However, there are several excellent EDI designs currently available in the marketplace from world-class manufacturers. As these designs are different, they do not all provide identical performance under specific operating conditions. Examples of EDI designs/manufacturers are ... [Pg.375]

In this case, there are two winners Don t fall into the trap of thinking that there must always be one clear winner. Sometimes there is, bnt sometimes, there are multiple products (perhaps even more than two). The goal is to predict all of the products, and to predict which products are major and which are minor. To accomplish this goal, you will need to perform the following three steps ... [Pg.235]

Whenever the net present value (NPV) is positive this means the project will yield more money (assuming all income is invested at the given interest rate when it is received) than if the money expended had been invested at the interest rate initially. A positive value, then, means the plant appears to be a winner. If the net present... [Pg.307]

The issue identification and ranking process was conducted for all of the firms in the study, and an individual firm report was prepared for each Quad for all industry groupings. Each Quad report contained results for the four firm types (Winner, Tumbler, Climber, and Eoser) summarized in eight tables, where tables 1 and 2 refer to firm type 1, 3 and 4 to firm type 2, and so on. Each table was followed by a brief summary of the conclusions that could be drawn concerning the... [Pg.92]

Each of our four firm types has a characteristic profile of foundation practices that is based upon the cluster weights determined above. Figure 6.1 portrays the results of these analyses for the Winner firms in what I call the normalized practice space (Joyce, 2005a). Each dimension of the practice space is shown on a scale of 0-100, and has been normalized to allow the use of a common scale for visualizing all... [Pg.95]

Winners do it all. With a strong strategy and execution. Winners build on these strategic practices to strengthen both structure and culture. They make few errors and enjoy the luxury of continually refining and improving already excellent practices. [Pg.99]

This very unfortunate scenario reinforces the absolute need for continuous monitoring programs for residues of all types in animal products, and in particular for hormone materials used for growth promotion. There were no winners in this cautionary tale, the regulatory officials on both sides of the dispute did not monitor the situation and did not provide the proper scientific information for decision-making. [Pg.283]

There are several books on the history of the development of taxol, which is one of the most remarkable stories in product development. In fact, it inspired the 1992 motion picture Medicine Man, starring Sean Connery as a research botanist looking for a cancer cure in the Brazilian rain forest. For a time, it became a moral drama pitting the needs of patients of intractable ovarian and breast cancer against the passions of environmentalists to preserve an obscure Pacific yew tree. Suffness and Wall are two of the principals in this story, and they wrote (1995) It [Taxol] is not an obvious winner till the very end, and there were a number of times till the very end when it seemed highly likely that it would not be put into development at all, or that once it had been accepted, it would be dropped. More than 30 years passed between the discovery of taxol, with its potential as an anticancer drug, and its approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for clinical use. [Pg.41]

On the other hand, there is more recent economic literature on racing behavior as applied to research activities. An important conclusion is that in a winner take all situation, there can be overinvestment in research activities. The reason is that the prospective gains may be less than the aggregate amount of the investment undertaken to achieve these gains. [Pg.69]
