A unique feature of the book is the inclusion of case studies, or cautionary tales, which are fictionalized versions of real-life occurrences that are interspersed between chapters of factual content. These fictionalized tales are based on my experience and reflect some of the more interesting and often more dramatic aspects of chemical problems in the workplace. 

Meantime, however, just to show that all the bad stuff doesn t necessarily happen on the shop floor, let s look at another cautionary tale, this time in an ordinary office environment. 

Enclosure takes the concept of isolation still further. In this approach, the complete operation is physically enclosed by an impervious barrier, perhaps metal or plastic, with access allowed only occasionally by suitably protected maintenance workers or in emergencies. This approach might be found, for example, in sand-blasting operations, in conditions where there is a severe fume hazard, or perhaps, as seen in the cautionary tale about Jake Whitman, in a continuous lead-quenching bath operation. It should be noted that in most instances, exhaust ventilation of the enclosed area should also be undertaken. 

This very unfortunate scenario reinforces the absolute need for continuous monitoring programs for residues of all types in animal products, and in particular for hormone materials used for growth promotion. There were no winners in this cautionary tale, the regulatory officials on both sides of the dispute did not monitor the situation and did not provide the proper scientific information for decision-making.

In the early days of companies coming to terms with environmental laws, especially laws concerning process wastes, there was considerable overreaction by all parties involved—that is, internal company lawyers, waste haulers, and government inspectors charged with ensuring compliance. A pair of cautionary tales illustrate the disconnects that can occur in setting up new systems. 

These words are worth bearing in mind throughout this book. We have very little experience with commercial fuel cells, and the only one we do have experience with provides a cautionary tale. In the end, this book is a combination of the books it might have been—an inspirational piece about an industry leader, a cautionary tale of a falling star, and something more a what-if question. 

The catalyzed aldol reaction in pure water offers a cautionary tale on overinterpretation of computationally derived mechanisms. The term catalysis may seem to be inappropriately applied to the role of water in the aldol reaction. The aldol reaction is in fact usually much slower in water than in organic solvents. Rather, as will be demonstrated, the catalytic role of water is to create an alternate pathway with a lower barrier than that for the noncatalytic, but aqueous, reaction.
