These polymers are essentially less toxic (factor of 2-10 at LDs0) and partially very much longer active than free sarkolysin. An increase in activity, however, is not attained. Here, the mode of action is, however, not clear because bifunctional chloro-alkylamine derivatives ( N-Lost derivatives) seem to be necessary to show some activity. Possibly in this case the alkylpyridinium compound decomposes into a derivative of ethylene or the chloroethyl group is formed again so that a second reactive group is formed besides the chloroethyl residue which is still present. 

Anhydrous methylamines and ethylamine ate considered flammable gases. They ate shipped under pressure (239 —446 kPa, 20—50 psig) and are available in bulk tank tmcks and laicats. Aqueous solutions of the methylamines and ethylamine are considered flammable Uquids and are available in churns, bulk tank tmcks, and laicais. Most of the other higher amines aie considered flammable or combustible hquids. All the lower alkylamines are also considered toxic and have strong odors. 

ALkylamines are toxic. Both the Hquids and vapors can cause severe irritations to mucous membranes, eyes, and skin. Protective butyl mbber gloves, aprons, chemical face shields, and self-contained breathing apparatus should be used by all personnel handling alkylamines. Amines are flammable and the lower mol wt alkylamines with high vapor pressures at ordinary temperatures have low flash points. Amines should be handled in weU-ventilated areas only after eliminating potential sources of ignition. 

There are 49 different formulations available in the United States, including 2,4-D salts (sodium, amine, alkylamine, and alkanolamine) and esters (propanoic acid, butanoic acid, and other alkoxy compounds). Concentrated fomiulations of 2,4-D esters are likely to contain petroleum solvents (identified on the first aicT statement on the pesticide label) while these are considered inert ingredients because they are not pesticides, they may have their own innate toxicity (see Toluene and Xylene, p 357 and Hydrocarbons, p 219).
