Alkyl 1,3-propanediamine

A diastereomeric mixture of l-alkyl-7-(]-alkylperhydropyrido[l,2-u]-pyrimidin-6-yl)-],2,3,4,8,9-hexahydro-9u-pyrido[],2-u]pyrimidines 412 was obtained in the reaction of glutaraldehyde and A-alkyl-1,3-propanediamines in the presence of a drop of AcOH at 0 °C, then at ambient temperature for 13 h (96H(43)2487). 

Manufacturing processes and equipment are similar to those employed for alcohol ethoxylate preparation. In the absence of steric hindrance, ethylene oxide reacts with both hydrogens of primary amines at relatively low temperatures (90—120°C) without added catalysts (105). When the nitrogen atom is hindered, as it is in the Triton RW products, only one of the amino hydrogens reacts with ethylene oxide. Once this reaction is complete, a basic catalyst is added and ethoxylation proceeds in the manner of the alcohol-based nonionics. In IV-alkyl-l,3-propanediamine, all three amino hydrogens are available for reaction with ethylene oxide. N-Alkyl-1,3-propanediamines are prepared from fatty monoamines and acrylonitrile, followed by reduction of the resulting 3-cyanoethylalkyl amine.

Fuel applications. Bitumen, the residuum of petroleum distillation, is gaining interest as a low cost fuel. The main problem with bitumen as a fuel is handling the viscous, almost solid product. This issue has been addressed by emulsifying molten bitumen in water using cationic surfactants such as tallow alkyl propanediamine [92] and salts of similar amines with fatty acids [93]. The emulsions thus prepared are pumpable and useful as fuels for stationary burning such as in power generation facilities.

More specialised products are made from secondary amines such as Ethomeen 2C/25 with the structure R2N(CH2CH20)xH based on dicocoamine. Also, there is a small series of products based on n-alkyl-l,3-propanediamines where all three hydrogen atoms on the nitrogen atoms are available for ethoxylation. These are Ethoduomeen T/13 and T/20 with 3- and 10-mol ethylene oxide added respectively.

Similarly, alkyl-linked bis(2-thioxo-[l,3,5]thiadiazinan-3-yl) carboxylic acids 258 can be synthesized starting from diamines 259 in 35-66% yield (Scheme 53) <2005BMC3413>. The yield of compounds made from the bulky diamine 2,2-dimethyl-l,3-propanediamine is low due to steric hindrance at the cyclization stage <2005BMC3413>.
